Five School Records Fall as Swimming & Diving Wins April Pools Virtual Meet

BALTIMORE – Lily Mead broke three school records for the women, while Reid Hussey and Conor Rutligliano added new program marks on the men's side for Loyola University Maryland during a two-day April Pools Invitational with five other Patriot League schools.

The Greyhound men won the virtual meet with a final score of 1097.5 points, while the women took first place with 931.5 points. Other schools competing included American, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Lehigh.

Mead broke her own school records in the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.90) and 100 backstroke (54.21 during Loyola's victorious 400 medley relay), and she added a new program best in the 400 IM (4:22.91) and a new pool record in the 50 free (23.34 during the 200 free relay).

Hussey entered the record books in the 200 butterfly, as he took first place with a new top mark of 1:47.80. Rutigliano broke his own record in the 50 back (22.94), as he teamed with Joey Cholish, Jimmy Hayburn and Caleb Kelly for a new pool record of 1:29.55 in the 200 medley relay.

The Greyhounds won 28 of 40 contested events overall, with 16 victories for the men and 12 for the women. 

Including the 200 medley, the men won all five relay events across the two days. Rutigliano, Brian Hess, Sung Lee and John Nguyen won the 400 medley (3:24.89), Kelly, Lee, Jonathan Brooks and Casey Brown took first in the 800 free (6:49.24), Kelly, Hussey, Lee and Hayburn were first in the 200 free (1:22.37), while Kelly, Rutigliano, Hussey and Hayburn won the 400 free (3:01.33).

The Loyola women won four of five relays. Mead, Emma Schouten, Elizabeth Walsh and Megan Dickey were first in the 400 medley (3:47.46), Mead, Claire Bowser, Lauren Joyce and Sarah Abril won the 800 free (7:42.04), Mead, Walsh Bowser and Dickey topped the field in the 200 free (1:34.53) and Mead, Izzy Barnette, Bowser and Dickey won the 400 free (3:26.91).

Kelly swept the sprint free events for the men. His time of 20.49 beat out Hayburn (20.95) in the 50 free, and his mark of 45.31 was first in the 100 free. 

Lee, named Male Swimmer of the Meet, posted individual wins in the 100 fly (49.45) and 500 free (4:40.83), while  Max Verheyen swept both the 200 IM (1:49.10) and 400 IM (3:54.41) events.

Other individual winners for the men were Zach Reid in the 200 free (1:42.03), Brooks in the 100 back (50.41), Mark Boran in the 200 back (1:48.61) and Jack Still in the 1-meter dive (270.70 points). Still was named co-Male Diver of the Meet after also taking second in the 3-meter (228.70).

Mead was announced as Female Swimmer of the Meet, as she added a first-place showing in the 1650 free (17:22.39) to go along with her other record-breaking efforts.

Dickey and Joyce were also multiple event winners for the women. Dickey won the 50 free (23.92) and 100 free (50.96), while Joyce took first in the 500 free (5:05.68) and 200 back (2:03.55). Schouten chipped in a first-place performance in the 200 breast (2:18.98).

The Greyhounds recognized 14 seniors to begin the Saturday afternoon session, as they took part in the final meet this spring at Mangione Pool. Loyola is back in action next weekend, traveling to Bucknell for a dual beginning at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
