EMMITSBURG, Md. – Loyola University Maryland's men's and women's tennis teams split a pair of matches on Wednesday at Mount St. Mary's University with the women's team beating the Mountaineers, 7-0, but the men were edged, 4-3.
The men fell behind 3-1 after losing the doubles point and two of the first three singles contests. After
Matt Cardano beat Parth Sharma, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles for the first point,
Oliver Davey and
Nick Haggar came up with a pair of straight-set victories.
Davey knocked off Russell Armstrong, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, and Haggar was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Evan Hine at No. 5.
The Mount, however, came away with the win as Jarrett Karinibad outlasted
Tyler Mast, 6-1, 7-6 (2) at No. 6.
Earlier in singles, Mount St. Mary's Jackson Wood beat
Edik Pribitkin, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1, and Elliot Stevens was a 6-1, 6-2 victor at No. 2 over
Charlie Shanker.
Haggar and Mast won the lone doubles match for Loyola, beating Hine and Joshua Spires, 6-3, at No. 3.
Loyola's women won all nine matches for the sweep.
Kateri Martin and
Abigail Thornton beat Megan Smith and Logan Lencheski, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles, and
Olivia Tracey paired with
Anna Rico for a 6-3 victory over Riya Mathur and Ana Alvarez-Storni at No. 2.
In singles, Martin was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Smith at No. 1, and Thornton beat Liang, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2. Tracey knocked off Mathur, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3, and Rico topped Alvarez-Storni, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4.
Decker earned a 6-3, 6-1 decision against Pittman at No. 5, and Thompson earned a point with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Lencheski at No. 6.
