Quick Hits About the 'Hounds

  • Loyola men's soccer looks to secure a Patriot League tournament spot on Saturday, as the Greyhounds conclude the regular season with a 7 p.m. road matchup at Bucknell. Loyola can clinch a playoff spot with a win or tie.
  • Loyola (2-1-1 PL, 2-1 South) enters the weekend in a three-way tie with American (2-1-1, 2-1) and Navy (3-1, 2-1) for first place in the South division standings, with Navy playing at American in a game beginning at 3 pm. The top two seeds overall in the division will qualify for the postseason
  • Bucknell (1-3-1, 1-2) is currently fourth out of five teams in the division.
  • Loyola has gone 23-6-2 against conference opponents since 2017, winning 35 games overall during that span.

Last Time Out

  • Albert Kang scored his first collegiate goal 14:57 into the first half, and Justin Ingram doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the 79th minute to send Loyola past Navy by a 2-0 final on Wednesday.
  • Sam Brown and Ingram set up Kang's opener, as Brown fed the ball back to Ingram on the left side. Ingram then found Kang near the top of the box, and he ripped a shot into the top corner to give the Greyhounds an early lead.
  • Loc San drew the penalty for Loyola with 11:17 left in regulation. That brought Ingram to the penalty spot, where he tucked an attempt into the left corner for his second goal of the spring.
  • Chase Vosvick made three saves in goal to secure his first shutout this season and 20th overall at Loyola.
  • Shots overall were 10-9 in favor of the Mids.

Series History

  • Bucknell leads 7-1-0 in a series which dates back to 2005.
  • Loyola picked up its first-ever win over the Bison last season, as a 64th minute goal by Jonathan Sousa was the only offense needed in a 1-0 road victory on Oct. 2, 2019.
  • Albert Kang and Davey Mason had the assists on Sousa's game-winner. Shots were 10-6 overall in favor of Loyola (2-0 SOG).
  • Bucknell had won each of the previous three meetings by 1-0 scorelines.

About the Bison

  • Bucknell (1-3-1 PL, 1-2 South) is 0-2-1 in its past three games since earning its lone victory of the spring with a 2-1 triumph over American on March 13.
  • The Bison dropped division games to Lehigh (4-1) and Navy (1-0), and are coming off a 0-0 draw with Colgate last Saturday.
  • Bucknell needs a victory over Loyola and a win by Navy or American to qualify for the Patriot League tournament. The Bison would be eliminated in any other scenario.
Patriot League Tournament Scenarios for Loyola
  • No. 1 seed in the South with win at Bucknell and draw by Navy/American, or with win at Bucknell and Navy win over American
  • No. 2 seed in the South with draw at Bucknell and draw by Navy/American (if three teams remain tied at seven points, American would be No. 1, Loyola No. 2, and Navy No. 3 based on head-to-head results between the sides during regular season)
  • No. 2 seed in the South with draw at Bucknell and win by either Navy OR American
  • No. 2 seed in the South with win at Bucknell and American win over Navy
  • Eliminated from playoff contention with loss at Bucknell
Quick Notes
  • Sam Brown (2 G, 2 A) has factored in four of Loyola's six goals this season. He earned his first Patriot League Midfielder of the Week award on Monday after scoring the lone goal in Loyola's draw at American last weekend.
  • Kelan Swales leads the team in both assists (3) and shots (10).
  • A three-time first team All-Region goalkeeper, Chase Vosvick has a 31-17-5 record with 20 shutouts, a .721 save percentage and a 1.03 GAA across 54 appearances.
  • Loc San was named the Patriot League's Offensive POW last Tuesday after scoring the double-overtime winner for Loyola against Lehigh on March 27.
  • Justin Ingram (3 G, 5 A) and Jonathan Sousa (2 G, 3 A) are Loyola's top returning scorers from 2019.
  • Loyola went 8-1-2 over its final 11 games in 2019, posting a third-consecutive season with 10+ victories with a final mark of 10-7-2 (7-2 PL). Included in the late season run was a 1-1 draw at #2 Wake Forest, a team which ultimately advanced to the Final Four.
  • Josh Fawole (2nd round, DC United) and Barry Sharifi (3rd round, NY Red Bulls) became Loyola's first MLS SuperDraft selections since 2009 last season.
  • Steve Nichols, a 1992 Loyola alum, returns for his seventh season as head coach. Nichols has posted four-straight winning seasons, coaching 11 PL major award winners, 15 All-Region honorees and a pair of All-Americans during that span.
Patriot League Tournament Format
  • The Patriot League is split into two five-team divisions this spring, with Loyola grouped in the South with American, Bucknell, Lehigh and Navy.
  • The top two teams in each division advance to the PL tournament, with semifinal games set for April 13 and the championship scheduled for April 17.
  • Division seeding will be determined based on points earned against division opponents (three points for a win, one for a tie). Only the first game played against a division opponent counts towards the team standings.
  • Tiebreaker information is available on the Patriot League website.
  • Each division winner will host the second-place team within its division in the semifinal round. The remaining team with the highest regular-season point total will host the championship game.
