Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sim, Defense Hold Off Lehigh, as Women’s Soccer Clinches Playoff Spot

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lois Edwards had two big team saves early, and Paige Sim matched a career high with eight stops in goal, as Loyola University Maryland booked its spot in the Patriot League tournament with a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Lehigh on Friday night.

The Greyhounds (3-1-1 PL, 2-1-1 South) clinch the No. 2 seed in the South division standings. They will travel to top-seeded Navy for a conference semifinal matchup next Wednesday. The Mountain Hawks (1-2-3 PL, 1-1-2 South) see their season come to an end despite finishing the contest with a 26-9 advantage in shots.

Edwards' team saves came just over four minutes into the first half, as she turned aside two-straight point-blank attempts from Lehigh's Grace Forsyth in front of the goal. An ensuing shot from Lisa Kestelboym was sent high to keep the game scoreless.

Sim took it from there, as she had two saves in the opening 45 minutes and an additional six after the break to secure her eighth career shutout and her third in five games this spring. She has allowed two goals in 473 minutes of game action this year, and will take a 0.38 goals-against average and .867 save percentage into the postseason.

Loyola did have several scoring chances of its own. Ada Clare Tempert led all players with four shots in the first half, including two which forced saves out of Miranda Royds in goal.

Taylor Kauffman had one of the best chances for either side in the second half, as her header off a Taylor DiMarco corner kick was just turned aside by a diving Royds in the 82nd minute.

The Greyhounds also had the best opportunity to score in extra time, as Sarah Bayer forced another diving stop out of Royds with 2:57 left in double overtime.

Sim had two key stops three minutes apart early in the second half, and she charged out of the box to prevent another quality scoring attempt from Lehigh's Julianna Bonner in the 71st minute. Sim had previously recorded eight saves during Loyola's regular season home finale against Colgate on Oct. 26, 2019.

The Greyhounds can now look towards a Patriot League semifinal rematch against Navy. The teams also met in the 2019 semifinal round, with the Mids advancing on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw. Wednesday's playoff matchup between the two sides will begin at 6 p.m. in Annapolis.
