SOUTH BEND, Ind. –
Kevin Lindley gave the Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse team a 9-8 lead with 2:04 left in regulation, but Duke University scored less than a minute later to force overtime, and the Blue Devils scored late in the first extra period for a 10-9 victory in the NCAA Quarterfinal at Notre Dame's Arlotta Stadium.
Evan James scored four times to lead the Greyhounds, including twice within a minute during the fourth quarter to draw the teams even at 7-7.
Fifteen seconds after James' tying tally, Brian Smyth scored for the Blue Devils (14-2 overall) in an unsettled situation, giving them an 8-7 advantage at 6:53.
Liam Bateman drew a slide while dodging down the right alley, stepped back and fired a pass to
Dan Wigley who slung a sidearm shot for a goal at 2:52 that tied the game fifth time.
Loyola won the next faceoff and took possession again.
Aidan Olmstead worked a pass up high to
Evan James who threw inside to Lindley for a finish and goal at 2:04, putting Loyola on top for the first time since early in the second quarter.
The Greyhounds came up with the loose ball on the ensuing draw, but Duke rode back a clear and drew a flag for unnecessary roughness at 1:38.
Brennan O'Neill scored on a low-to-low shot on extra-man at 1:09, knotting the game for the sixth time.
The Blue Devils got the back, still on extra-man, but the Greyhounds killed the penalty and got back to six-on-six. After a Duke timeout, Loyola's defense held the Blue Devils to just a Nakeie Montgomery shot from outside of 12 yards that
Sam Shafer saved, and the teams went to overtime.
In the extra period, Duke's Michael Sowers appeared to have a step to get his hands free inside of eight yards in front of the goal.
Matt Higgins and
Matt Hughes, however, slid to Sowers and jarred the ball loose with
Cam Wyers picking up the ground ball.
Loyola called a timeout after clearing, but a turnover with less than two minutes to play gave the ball back to the Blue Devils.
Duke's Joe Robertson got topside from 'X,' and though his shot was partially blocked, it trickled in for the deciding goal.
Shafer made a career-high 17 saves for the Greyhounds, one more than he had in the NCAA First Round a week ago at Denver. Over Loyola's last five games – all against ranked teams in Georgetown, Navy, Army West Point, Denver and Duke – Shafer made 67 saves.
Loyola took a 2-1 lead in the game's first five minutes after Duke's Aidan Danenza scored the opener 2:46 into the contest. James logged his first off an Olmstead assist, one of his three, less than a minute later.
Seth Higgins then scored unassisted at 10:36 to put the Greyhound sin front.
Duke game back to tie at 2-2 on O'Neill's first of four, but
Adam Poitras caught a
Seth Higgins feed to score with 2:05 left in the first quarter.
The Greyhounds carried the lead in to the second quarter, but Duke scored three times in the first five minutes of the stanza to build a 5-3 lead it would take into halftime.
Loyola then scored the first two goals of the second half, James and Lindley both tallying markers on Olmstead assists with Lindley's making it 5-5 at 1:48. The Blue Devils responded with a transition goal at 1:28, regaining a one-goal lead.
Robertson made it 7-5 with 13:13 left in regulation before James scored his two in a row in a 55-second span.
