BETHLEHEM, Pa. –
Peter Swindell scored twice during a 4-0 Loyola University Maryland run, and the Greyhounds pulled away for an 11-10 victory over the U.S. Military Academy on Friday night in the Patriot League Semifinals at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
The Greyhounds (10-5 overall) will face host Lehigh University in the championship game on Sunday, May 9, at 12 noon on CBS Sports Network.
Loyola had an extra-man possession late in the third quarter, and Swindell found himself with time and room on the top-right of the box, and he stepped into a high-to-high shot that found netting to tie the game at 7-7 with 53 ticks left in the frame.
Kevin Lindley then dodged a pole from 'X' and fed
Aidan Olmstead who scored from left point with 11:11 on the fourth-quarter clock to put the Greyhounds in front.
Evan James added an unassisted tally 57 seconds later, and the Greyhounds had the first two-goal lead either team had enjoyed in the game.
Swindell made it 10-7 Loyola with 7:37 to go in regulation, running out of the box and catching an
Adam Poitras feed on the run to score his second of the game.
Army West Point (7-4) responded quickly with a Brendan Nichtern goal 30 seconds later, but
Seth Higgins and
Riley Seay played a two-man game to create the Greyhounds' response. Higgins dodged hard from the right alley and threw behind the cage to Seay who curled up the left side of the crease to score his second of the night and make it a three-goal game again.
Nichtern was involved in the next two goals, finding a cutting Bobby Abshire for a goal at 4:35 and then dropping his shoulder on the left side of the cage to score with 4:03 to go in the game, trimming Loyola's lead to 11-10.
The teams traded turnover over the next 90 seconds before
Jack Decker had a look on the cage from inside of three yards. Army West Point goalkeeper Wyatt Schupler, however, made a tough save with 1:49 to play, and the Black Knights cleared it to their offensive end.
Loyola put the ball on the ground, but Nikolas Edinger got to the ground ball and saved possession for the Black Knights who called a timeout. Out of the break, Nichtern restarted below goal-line extended, throwing to Nicholas Garofano for a 13-yard stepdown look on the high left side.
Greyhounds goalkeeper
Sam Shafer saved the shot cleanly, and Loyola cleared the ball up the right side, calling a timeout with 49 seconds left.
They ran out the clock, carrying the ball for nearly a minute to secure the win.
Loyola won despite a 43-34 shot advantage for the Black Knights. Shafer made 12 saves, six in each half for the Greyhounds.
Olmstead, Swindell and Seay each had two goals for the Greyhounds, while Lindley, Poitras, James,
Dan Wigley and
Matt Higgins each scored one. Lindley tied his career-high with two assists, while Poitras had a pair, too.
Seth Higgins, Olmstead and Swindell each added helpers.
