NORFOLK, Va. –
Abby Hamilton and
Ashley Dwyer had back-to-back kills to tie the third set at 20-20, and then a
Sophie Brenner kill gave the Greyhounds the lead for good as Loyola University Maryland swept Hampton, 25-21, 28-26, 25-23 to finish the first day of the ODU Invitational with a 1-1 record.
Earlier in the day, the Greyhounds lost in three to West Virginia University.
Hamilton finished with 10 kills and 12 digs, while
Caitlin Churney and
Megan Bukala both had seven kills.
Katie Forsythe tallied 19 digs, and Dwyer added a match-best 23 assists.
The Pirates used a 4-0 run to lead 18-14 on a Clara Smith kill, and a Gabby Calloway kill made it 19-15 Hampton advantage.
Adara Kellogg Sided out for Loyola with a kills, and she then teamed with Dwyer on a block to get the Greyhounds back within two, but a Pirates block stretched the Hampton advantage back to three.
Loyola sided out on a Hampton attack error, leading to the kills from Hamilton and Dwyer to tie the score at 20-20.
Brooke Irvin had a solo block on the next point for Hampton, but
Cecylia Guye came back with a kill for Loyola to even the set at 21-21.
Isis Black sided out for the Pirates with a kill, giving them a 22-21 advantage, but a Hampton attack error evened the set again. Brenner's kill, and another from Guye gave Loyola a 24-22 lead, and Guye closed the match with a kill two points later.
Guye finished the match with six kills, hitting .667 for the Greyhounds.
Loyola will finish the ODU Invitational with a match against the host Monarchs on Saturday at 4 p.m.
