BALTIMORE –
Justin Ingram totaled three points (1 G, 1 A),
Matthew Lala scored his first collegiate goal and
Chase Vosvick recorded his 21st career shutout as Loyola University Maryland began the 2021 fall season with a 2-0 victory over UC Irvine on Sunday.
Lala headed in an Ingram corner to open the scoring in the 52nd minute, and
Kelan Swales set up Ingram for an insurance strike with 20 minutes remaining as the Greyhounds (1-0-0) topped the Anteaters (0-2-0) in the first meeting between the two schools. Vosvick made three saves in goal, all of which occurred in the opening half.
UC Irvine had the game's first three shots, including a 1-on-1 effort for Lawrence Yamaguchi which was turned aside by a charging Vosvick in the 21st minute. Vosvick had another diving stop off a header by Kwabena Boateng in the 33rd minute, as he improved to 18-6-2 lifetime at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Loyola had more of the ball to start the second half and was rewarded with a goal just 6:39 after the break. Ingram's corner from the right side went straight to Lala, who headed a powerful effort into the upper left corner.
Swales, who led the Patriot League with four assists during the shortened 2021 spring campaign, picked up where he left off in the 70th minute. He sent a ball from the right side to the top of the box, where Ingram delivered a low attempt into the left corner to double the advantage.
The Greyhounds had seven of the game's 10 shot attempts in the second half, ending the contest with an overall 9-6 edge in shots. They also had a 4-1 lead in corner kicks over the Anteaters, who advanced to the NCAA tournament in 2018 and were edged 2-1 by No. 5 Georgetown in their season opener on Friday.
Ingram has now recorded a point in four-straight games dating back to the spring, and he has 23 points (7 G, 9 A) in 26 career appearances for Loyola.
Jordy Luchies,
Tony Saldana,
Marco Bla,
Daniel Tshiani and
Sean Graham all cracked the starting lineup in their Loyola debuts, while three more newcomers (
Kyle Dengler,
Jake Mayer,
Jake Sweeney) saw action off the bench.
The Greyhounds now hit the road for five-straight contests, beginning with a 7 p.m. matchup at Old Dominion next Friday.
