Four Second-Half Goals Help Women’s Soccer Roll Past Iona

BALTIMORE – Four different Loyola University Maryland players scored in the second half, as the Greyhounds ran away from Iona for a 5-1 victory at Ridley Athletic Complex on Sunday night.

Olivia Quaranta and Baylee DeSmit each registered their first collegiate goals, while Sarah Bayer and Ada Clare Tempert added solo strikes for the Greyhounds (2-2-0), who scored their most goals in a game since Oct. 1, 2018. The Gaels (2-2-0) allowed an own goal for the lone tally of the first half before avoiding the shutout on an 87th minute free kick.

Nicole Rivas was the primary instigator of that own goal, which occurred 16:16 prior to the intermission. Her corner kick from the right side eluded a jumping Emma Havrilla in goal before deflecting off a defender and into the net.

Rivas also initiated Loyola's second goal. This time it was on a corner from the left side which was headed by Quaranta straight into the upper right corner. Less than five minutes later, a Sarah Mirr free kick found Bayer in front, and she beat new goalie Sam Rom for the Greyhounds' third of the night.

Bayer's goal was the 10th of her collegiate career, while Mirr (1 G, 3 A) now has points in 3 of 4 games to begin the season.

DeSmit's tally came in the 67th minute, a highlight-reel free kick blast into the top right corner after Loyola drew a foul just outside the box. Tempert completed the scoring in the 76th minute, with Shea Carroll and Lois Edwards each recording their first collegiate assists on the play. Edwards sent a free kick to Carroll on the left side, with Carroll then finding Tempert in front for a chip shot over Rom and into the right corner.

Paige Sim played the first 78:53 in goal, not needing to make a save before Anna Miller subbed in for the final 11 minutes. Miller made three stops in her collegiate debut.

Loyola's last five-goal offensive effort came in a 5-1 home victory over Delaware State back in 2018. The Greyhounds improved to 21-2-2 lifetime against Iona, with the teams squaring off for the first time since 2012.

Next up for Loyola is a road trip to Wake Forest on Thursday, with opening kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
