Women’s Soccer Drops 3-0 Decision at Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Shayla Smart scored all three goals, and Wake Forest kept Loyola University Maryland's offense in check throughout the contest to secure a 3-0 victory over the Greyhounds on Thursday night.

Smart, who leads the Demon Deacons (5-0-0) with six goals overall on the year, scored in the 11th, 12th and 58th minutes for the home side. Wake Forest limited Loyola (2-3-0) to a pair of shots on goal while picking up its fifth clean sheet in as many games to begin the year.

Smart was led in on a breakaway by Nikayla Small 10:22 into the opening half, and she sent a shot into the top right corner 97 seconds later to double the home side's advantage.

The Greyhounds settled things down for the remainder of the first half, limiting the Demon Deacons to just five additional shots heading into the intermission. Grace DenBleyker forced a save out of goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks in the 37th minute.

Loyola earned the first two corner kicks of the second half, the second of which led to a header from Sarah Bayer sent wide right of the goal. Baylee DeSmit added a final shot for the visitors in the 89th minute, with her effort from just outside the box stopped by backup goalie Madison Howard.

Smart was once again led in by Small for the game's final goal, as she sent a low shot from the right side just inside the left post. The Demon Deacons have now outscored their opponents 14-0 on the year.

Paige Sim made six saves in goal for the Greyhounds, giving her six or more saves in four of Loyola's five games so far this season.

This was the first meeting between the two sides since 2011, and just the fifth meeting overall. Wake Forest improved to 4-1-0 lifetime in the series.

The Greyhounds return to Ridley Athletic Complex on Sunday, hosting Fairleigh Dickinson in a matchup beginning at 6 p.m.
