BALTIMORE –
Abby Hamilton had 12 kills to lead three Loyola University Maryland players in double figures, and the Greyhounds combined for a .303 attack percentage overall during a 3-0 sweep over Navy at Reitz Arena on Sunday. Set scores were 25-23, 25-18, 25-23.
Loyola (9-3, 1-0 PL) extended its winning streak to six matches, the longest run for the program since October, 1997, and topped the Midshipmen (4-6, 0-1 PL) for the first time since Sept. 5, 2009.
Hamilton (12 kills, .263%),
Lauren Link (11 kills, .273%) and
Cat Vaccaro (10 kills, .381%) paced the offense, while
Kacy Sekunda supplied 36 assists and 18 digs and
Katie Forsythe added 23 digs for the home side. Of Loyola's nine victories on the year, eight have been 3-0 sweeps.
Link led the attack during a 7-0 run for the Greyhounds to conclude the first set, contributing three kills and a block to help Loyola rally from a late five-point deficit. She reached double-digit kills for a third time in the last five matches.
Navy again held a late advantage at 16-13 in the second set. The Greyhounds, though, won 10 of the next 11 points, including six-straight with Forsythe serving, to retake control.
The final set was tight throughout, with neither side up by more than four points at any point. A kill from
Adara Kellogg set up Loyola's first match point at 24-22, and she teamed with Vaccaro for the clinching block two points later.
Kellogg led the Greyhounds with four blocks in the victory. Loyola's .303 attack percentage was its second-highest in a match this season.
Forsythe surpassed 20 digs for a sixth time this fall, while
Corinne Filograna (11 digs) also reached double figures on the defensive end.
With the win, Loyola snapped an 18-match losing streak to Navy, topping the Mids for the first time since joining the Patriot League in 2013.
The Greyhounds remain at home for their next matchup, hosting Army West Point at 7 p.m. next Friday.
