BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland had 10 hitting errors in the first set, but the Greyhounds hit .278 with the same number of miscues in the next three sets to rally for a 20-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-15 win over the U.S. Military Academy, extending the program's best start to a season.
The Greyhounds' their 10-3 record is their best-ever through 13 games, and the team reached two more plateaus with the win. It picked up its school-record seventh victory in a row and starting 2-0 in the Patriot League for the first time since joining the conference in 2013.
Lauren Link led four Greyhounds with nine or more kills, totaling 14, while
Abby Hamilton posted 11 of her 13 in the final two sets.
Cecylia Guye had 10 kills without an error in 20 swings, and
Cat Vaccaro added nine in the match, four in the final set.
Adara Kellogg had six total blocks to match her six kills, and
Kacy Sekunda dished out 39 assists to go with 16 digs.
Loyola had 80 digs in the match while holding Army West Point (8-4 overall, 2-1 Patriot League) to a .085 hitting percentage.
Katie Forsythe had 21, while
Corinne Filograna added 17. Hamilton added 15, and Link had 10 as they joined Sekunda as Greyhounds with double-doubles in the match.
The Greyhounds (10-3, 2-0) led by three, 17-14 after an Army West Point attack error in the third set, and a Guye kill later made it 20-17, but the Black Knights came back to score the next three points.
Savannah Bray tied the set at 20-20 with a kill, but Link sided out with a kill for the Greyhounds. Bray again came up with a kill to tie the set again, but an Army West Point attack error gave Loyola a 22-21 lead.
Kellogg and Hamilton then locked up a block, and Forsythe served an ace to put the Greyhounds up with a lead they would not give up.
Loyola continues Patriot League play on Saturday evening when it plays a neutral site game against College of the Holy Cross at 6:30 at Towson University's SECU Arena.
