BALTIMORE – Dylan Scanley scored the game's only goal 4:20 into the second half, and Holy Cross overcame a late offensive flurry from Loyola University Maryland to escape Ridley Athletic Complex with a 1-0 victory on Saturday.
Matt McGonigle and Marcus Williams set up the game-winner for the Crusaders (5-2-2, 2-0-0 PL), who avenged an 8-1 defeat to the Greyhounds (2-3-2, 1-1-1 PL) when the teams last met back in 2019. Loyola had seven of the game's final nine shots, but was unable to get anything past Jimmy Joyce in goal.
Holy Cross had two chances to score in the opening three minutes, with a long-range effort rattling off the crossbar and another header in front stopped by a diving
Chase Vosvick.
Daniel Tshiani then kept the game scoreless for the Greyhounds in the 19th minute, as he produced a team save on the line following a scramble off a corner kick.
Vosvick had no chance on the lone goal, as McGonigle found Scanley alone on the goal line for a tap-in after the initial cross from Williams.
Loyola defenders had two of the home side's top chances to score in the final 20 minutes, as
Kyle Dengler had a header off a free kick saved in the 74th minute and
Jordy Luchies sent a header just high and wide with 4:57 remaining. The Greyhounds' final opportunity came from Vosvick, who had a shot blocked in the final minute after he moved to the offensive end in search of a late equalizer.
The Crusaders, who topped defending Patriot League champions American in last week's Patriot League opener, snapped a four-game losing streak to Loyola and are 2-0 in conference play for the first time since 2008.
Shots were even at 11-11, while Holy Cross had an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Greyhounds had over 1,000 fans fill Ridley this afternoon, and they will remain at home for their next contest, hosting William & Mary in a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
