TOWSON, Md. –
Abby Hamilton had 16 kills and Katie Forsyth added a season-high 31 digs to lead Loyola University Maryland's volleyball team on both sides of the net Friday as the Greyhounds opened the Towson Invitational with a 25-22, 25-22, 26-24 win over Princeton University at SECU Arena.
Sophie Brenner added 11 kills, while fellow freshman
Kacy Sekunda had a season-high 34 assists.
Adara Kellogg was in on six blocks, while
Cat Vaccaro had six kills.
Princeton built a 20-15 first-set lead an Elena Montgomery kill, but the Greyhounds got back within a pair moments later after back-to-back kills by Kellogg and Hamilton.
The Tigers sided out on a Loyola service error, but Kellogg and Sekunda blocked Montgomery to sideout for the Greyhounds and start a 5-0 run. Another Kellogg-Sekunda block made it 23-21 Loyola before a Princeton sideout. Loyola continued its momentum, however, with the third Kellogg-Sekunda block of the last seven points, and it closed the match on a Kellogg service ace.
Loyola led throughout the second set and then used a 7-0 run during the third to build a 19-14 lead on a Vaccaro kill.
The teams split the next 10 points evenly, and a block by Kellogg and Brenner made it 24-19 to give Loyola match-point. Princeton, however, reeled off five-straight points to tie the set at 24-24 before a Hamilton kill gave the Greyhounds their second set-point opportunity.
A Princeton attack error then secured the victory for the Greyhounds who will play host Towson at 6:30 p.m. in their second match of the tournament.
Brenner and
Corinne Filograna each had 11 digs for the Greyhounds, and Sekunda had four blocks to go with her 34 assists.
