Weekend At Reitz

  • Loyola University Maryland volleyball hosts the final two of a five-match homestand this week as it plays its final midweek contest of the regular-season, followed by a Saturday afternoon game.
  • American comes to Reitz Arena on Wednesday, October 26, to face the Greyhounds in a 7 p.m. match, and Navy follows on Saturday, October 29 for a 4 p.m. start.
  • Both matches will stream live on ESPN+.

Link-ing The Kills

  • Lauren Link broke out as a sophomore outside hitter for the Greyhounds in 2021, finishing second on the team with 3.24 kills per set, a mark good for fifth-best in the Patriot League. She had 17 matches with 10 or more kills, including each of the Greyhounds' last 13 contests. During that stretch, she averaged 14.1 kills per match and 3.6 kills per set.
  • This season, Link has moved into a role as the Greyhounds' primary option on the outside, and she has the stats to back it up. In 18 matches, she has put away 294 kills, an average of 4.39 per set.
  • Link's 4.39 kills per set are tops in the Patriot League and 17th in the NCAA.
  • She has five matches with 20 or more kills, 12 with 15-plus, and she has put away 11 or more kills in all but two of the 18 matches Loyola has played this year.

Getting More Chances Than The Rest

  • Loyola's defense has given the Greyhounds more offensive opportunities than just about every team nationally this season.
  • The Greyhounds are fifth nationally in digs per set with 17.55, and as a result they rank second amongst NCAA Division I teams with 38.87 attacks per set.
  • Individually, Katie Forsythe is eighth in the NCAA in digs per set (5.49), and Lauren Link is ninth in attacks per set (12.46).

All Of The Records

  • Katie Forsythe became the Patriot League and Loyola all-time record holder in digs on October 23, 2021, matching her previous status atop both the conference and school lists for digs in a season and a match.
  • In that match at American, Forsythe had her 2,013th career dig early in the contest, passing the Eagles' Kristen Largay (2016-19) for tops in the conference; late in the match, she moved past Brittany Born's mark of 2,042 to set the school record.
  • In 113 career matches, Forsythe has 2,568 digs. At Army West Point on October 8, Forsythe became the first player in Loyola and Patriot League history, and the 23rd in NCAA Division I to cross the 2,500-dig plateau. She now ranks No. 16 in Division I history in career digs.
  • With 5.86 digs per set over the course of her career, she is the active career leader in that category.
  • In 2019, she set the school record, and tied the Patriot League mark with 45 digs in a match, and her 753 digs that season stand as a school and conference mark.
  • The four-time Patriot League Libero of the Year has finished in the top four of Division I players in digs per set during all three of her collegiate seasons, ranking fourth in 2018, third in 2019 and fourth in 2020. Her averages of 5.86, 6.17 and 6.04 are the three highest in Patriot League history. Last year, she ranked third in NCAA Division I with 5.71 digs per set.

Contributions From Across The Lineup

  • Over the past several weeks, different players have stepped up to play key roles in the Greyhounds' offense, particularly on the right-side of the attack.
  • Caitlin Churney averaged 3.33 kills per set in three Patriot League matches before missing time with an injury since September 24.
  • Riley Hamilton was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week after matches on September 30 against Bucknell and October 1 versus Lafayette when she averaged 2.29 kills and 2.43 digs per set.
  • Sophie Brenner has now stepped into the right-side role and produced quality numbers. In the last four matches – starting with a four-set win at Army West Point – Brenner is averaging 3.0 kills with 42 over 14 sets.

Setting It Up

  • Ashley Dwyer has taken over as the Greyhounds' primary setter since an injury to Kacy Sekunda, and has posted strong numbers since. In eight matches as the starter, Dwyer has averaged 10.96 assists per set with 362 total across 33 frames; she had a season-high 50 in a five-set loss at Navy.
