Baltimore, MD -- The Loyola Greyhounds hosted the American Eagles on Wednesday night for their regular season finale. The Eagles would use an early goal, and a late penalty kick to win 2-1.
The Eagles scored in the 4th minute, as they were able to capitalize on a Greyhound miscue, as the Greyhounds mis-kicked the ball on a clearance attempted, that then got deflected, as an Eagle attacker was able to bury it in the back of the net. From there, the Greyhounds had the momentum on offense, as they out-shot the Eagles 11-3 in the first half, but could not capitalize, as the Eagles took a 1-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Greyhounds stayed on the offensive, as they forced a corner kick just 30 seconds into the half. From there they created numerous attempts and could not find the back of the net. Then in the 72nd minute,
Baylee DeSmit converted on her 6th goal of the season as she scored on a free kick to tie it up.
The game did not stay tied for long however, as the Greyhounds were called for a questionable foul in the box on
Paige Sim. The Eagles scored on the ensuing penalty kick to take a 2-1 lead. Once again, the Greyhounds were on the aggressive on offense, as they out-shot the Eagles 14-2 in the second half, but could not convert. A last second shot by
Riley Kennel was saved as the Eagles held on to win 2-1.
The Greyhounds out-shot the Eagles 25-5 on the game, as
Baylee DeSmit had 6 shots on the night, while
Ada Clare Tempert had 4 shots. The Greyhounds will head into the Patriot League Championship, as they clinched the No. 6 seed. They will travel to face Boston on Sunday October 30th for a 2 pm kick-off.
