Swimming & Diving Wins Seven Events In Saturday Action At Thomas Murphy Invitational

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving combined to win seven events Saturday during the second day of the Thomas Murphy Invitational at the Mangione Pool at the Fitness and Aquatic Center.

The men's team won both relays contested during the second of three days of the meet, and Tyler Stewart, Henry Mueller, Teddy Cross and Jack Still all won individual events. Lily Mead cruised to a win for the women's team in the 400 individual medley.

Through 28 events, the Loyola men's team leads the event with 1,073 points, followed by Towson University (912) and Johns Hopkins University (774). Towson holds a razor-thin lead on the women's side with 1,061.5 points to the Greyhounds' 1,049.5 as the Blue Jays have scored 791 points in that meet.

Loyola's men opened Saturday's finals with a win in the 400 medley relay as Teddy Cross, Max Verheyen, Cameron Shinnick and Caleb Kelly raced to a time of 3:15.95, just over a half-second off setting a pool record in the event. 

Mead's win in the 400 individual medley came with a time of 4:24.52 as she beat Madeline Frick of Towson by more than 1.5 seconds. Stewart won the men's version of the race, finishing in 3:57.78.

Henry Mueller and Harry Hearn went one-two in the men's 200 freestyle with times of 1:38.52 and 1:40.74, respectively, while Cross and Patrick Hayburn did the same thing in the men's 100 backstroke in 49.26 and 29.64.

Still was a winner in the 3-meter diving competition, scoring 256.20 points, and he also was the recipient of the prestigious Thomas Murphy Scholarship, presented at the meet. Named in honor of the Loyola swimming and diving coach who was also a graduate of the school. The award honors a student-athlete who has been a key contributor to the team and demonstrates high academic achievement.

The Greyhounds' final win of the night came in the men's 200 freestyle relay as Hayburn, Mueller, Cross and Kelly swan a time of 1:21.62 for the win.

The meet will conclude Sunday with preliminary races at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
