Baltimore, MD -- A pair of
Taleah Dixon free throws with 3.9 seconds remaining gave the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team a one-point lead late on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds forced a long last second shot to secure a 62-61 over Hofstra to cap-off their non-conference schedule.
The Pride extended its lead to three points with 24.2 seconds remaining in overtime after making a pair of free-throws.
Bri Rozzi managed to draw a foul and made both of her free throws to cut their deficit down to one point with 18 seconds left.
On the ensuing Hofstra inbounds, Caramina Tanedo forced a turnover to get the ball back for the Greyhounds. Coming out of a timeout with four seconds remaining,
Taleah Dixon forced a foul on the inbounds pass, to head to the foul line with 3.9 seconds left.
Dixon knocked down both free throws to take the lead, as the Greyhounds then forced a late desperation shot by the Pride to secure an 62-61 overtime win.
Dixon had a game high 21 points, including three three-pointers and a perfect 8-8 from the foul line on the afternoon. She scored 9 of her 21 points in the third quarter.
Rozzi finished the day with 11 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals.
Lex Therien added 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals on the day, while
Kelly Ratigan followed up a career high of eight points against Pitt, with seven points on the afternoon.
Laura Salmeron saw her first action of the season after recovering from a knee injury, as she played 13 minutes on the afternoon, tallying two points, three rebounds and a steal.
The Greyhounds started the game clicking, as they were easily able to break the Pride's press early, as they led 13-10 with 3:37 left in the quarter. Dixon knocked down a step-back three-pointer with quarter winding down as the Greyhounds led 18-14 heading into the second quarter.
The Greyhounds built up to their largest lead of the game, seven points, after Therien scored on a layup. The Pride responded quickly with back-to-back three-pointers to cut their deficit down to one. After a Ratigan three-pointer with under one minute remaining, Tanedo scored on a put back at the buzzer to take an 32-28 halftime lead.
The Pride started the second half strong, as they quickly tied the game at 32-32. Dixon had a strong quarter, as she had nine points in the quarter. Despite jumping out to an 42-36 lead with three minutes remaining, the Pride battled back to tie it up 45-45 going into the fourth.
Rozzi found Ratigan on a backdoor cut to take an 54-50 lead with 3:48 remaining in the fourth. The Pride responded with a three-pointer to cut their deficit to one point. After a Rozzi free-throw, the Pride tied it at 55-55 with 1:13 remaining. Both defenses stepped up, as neither team could score as the game went to overtime.
Rozzi started overtime strong for the Greyhounds, as she hit a three-pointer on the first possession. The Pride scored on back-to-back possessions to take a 59-58 lead with 3:21 remaining. Neither team scored over the next two minutes, as two late Dixon free-throws secured the Greyhounds win.
The win secures the Greyhounds most non-conference wins since the 2012-13 season (five wins). They will begin conference play on December 30, as they travel to face Colgate.
