Hamilton, NY – The Loyola Maryland women's basketball began conference play on Friday afternoon with a matchup against Colgate.
Devyne Newman tied the game late in the fourth, and the teams went to overtime where the Greyhounds outscored the Raiders, 10-5, andwon 61-56.
With the win, the Greyhounds begin the conference season 1-0 for the first time in seven years, dating back to the 2015-16 season. The win is also the first road conference win since February 1, 2020, when the Greyhounds won 50-44 over Navy.
Taleah Dixon and
Lex Therien started overtime strong, scoring on the first two possessions of period to give Loyola a four-point lead. After a Raiders layup, Dixon scored on back-to-back possessions, making a pair of free throws and hitting a pull-up jump shot from the elbow, as the Greyhounds led 59-53 with 38 seconds remaining.
The Raiders responded with a three-pointer to cut it to a three-point Greyhounds lead, but Dixon sealed the overtime win with a pair of free throws.
Newman hit a jump-shot with 7:03 left in the fourth quarter to give the Greyhounds their first lead since the 6:22 mark in the first quarter, 46-45. The Raiders responded quickly as they retook the lead in the fourth quarter.
Dixon scored on a jumper from the elbow with 3:00 minutes remaining to tie the score with 2:36 remaining, and after the Raiders took the lead again, Newman hit a jumper from outside the paint to tie the game once again, this time with 42 seconds remaining. The Greyhounds got a stop on defense and had a chance to win at the buzzer, but a Dixon jumper went long sending the game went to overtime.
Therien scored a game-high 18 points and added 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. She scored 14 of her 18 points in the third quarter, including her first three-pointer of the season.
Newman scored 14 points off the bench for the Greyhounds in her first game of the season; she also added four rebounds and three assists. Dixon scored 12 points in the game, while adding four assists and four steals. She scored 8 of her 12 points in overtime to help secure the win.
Koi Sims scored 11 points while adding 10 rebounds, for her first career double double. Sims also added a steal and a block in the game.
Heading into the third quarter, the Greyhounds trailed by seven points.
Lex Therien took over in the third quarter, as she scored 14 of the Greyhounds 21 points in the quarter, including her first three-pointer of the season, as the Greyhounds trailed by three points heading into the fourth quarter.
The Greyhounds struggled from the floor in the second quarter as they shot just 3-10 from the floor and scored six points in the quarter. Their defense stepped up however, as they managed to hold the Raiders to just 13 points in the quarter to trail by just seven points at halftime.
Koi Sims had a strong first quarter, scoring seven points in the quarter.
Devyne Newman scored four points off the bench in the quarter, as Sims and Newman combined for 11 of 13 points in the quarter. The Greyhounds defense held the Raiders to 37.5% shooting in the quarter as they were tied 13-13 heading into the second quarter.
The Greyhounds will continue conference play on Monday, as they will host American on Monday evening at 7:00 PM at Reitz Arena.
