Baltimore, MD -- American University traveled to face Loyola Maryland on Monday evening in what was a defensive battle. American University used a 20-point fourth quarter to push their lead to double-digits, as the Eagles went on to win 52-37 on Monday evening game two of Patriot League play.
The Eagles started fast, as they jumped out to a eight point lead with 7:28 remaining in the first quarter. The Greyhounds responded with two quick baskets from
Koi Sims and
Devyne Newman to cut the deficit to four points.
Kelly Ratigan knocked down a three-pointer with 1:00 minute remaining in the first quarter, to cut their deficit down to five points, as the Greyhounds trailed 14-9 at the end of the first quarter.
The Greyhounds got out to a quick start in the second quarter, quickly cutting their deficit down to one point, as Sims and
Lex Therien scored on back-to-back possessions to start the quarter. Coming out of a timeout, the Eagles used a 6-0 run to retake a seven-point lead. The Greyhounds battled back late in the quarter, as a Newman jumper with 17 seconds left in the first half cut their deficit down to one point, before Sadie Stetson scored right before the buzzer, as the Eagles led 24-21 at halftime.
Both teams found themselves in a defensive battle in the third quarter. Sims scored on a layup with 3:41 remaining in the third quarter, as the Greyhounds took their first lead, 28-27, with 3:41 left in the third quarter. The Eagles knocked down a three-pointer and a layup with under a minute remaining, as they took an 32-28 lead into the fourth quarter.
Taleah Dixon knocked down a jump-shot with 6:09 remaining to cut their deficit down to five points. The Greyhounds, however, could not cut into the Eagles lead, as the Eagles used an 12-4 run over the last three-mintues of the game to secure an 52-37 win over the Greyhounds.
Koi Sims and
Devyne Newman had a team high eight points on the night. Sims added 11 rebounds and two blocks, while
Kelly Ratigan and
Taleah Dixon scored six points each.
The Greyhounds will continue Patriot League play on Thursday as they travel to face Army West Point at 6:00 PM.
