The Matchup

Last Time Out
- Caramina Tañedo's corner 3-pointer 2:16 into the fourth quarter capped a 13-3 Loyola run and cut Holy Cross's lead to 42-41, but the Crusaders scored the next five points to build enough of a cushion for an eventual 58-49 win in Reitz Arena.
- Loyola trailed 39-28 after a Cara McCormack three at 1:31 left in the third quarter, but Laryn Edwards drove the left side of the lane and scored an and-one, making the free throw to spark the rally.
- Janelle Allen would go 1 of 2 at the free-throw line with 49 seconds on the clock, but a pull-up jumper from the left short corner by Keegan Douglas with just over 20 ticks left pulled the Greyhounds within seven entering the fourth.
- Emily McAteer made a bucket 19 seconds into the frame, and Lex Therien conveted the second of two at the line less than a minute later, making it a four-point Crusaders lead. Douglas then came away with a steal and was fouled going to the basket, making both shots to trim the lead to 40-38.
- Addisyn Cross, however, made two free throws with an even 8:00 on the clock, and Holy Cross was back up by four.
- After Cross's shots, Loyola moved the ball up the court quickly, and an entry pass was thrown to Charia Roberts on the low block, but she quickly kicked it to an open Tañedo in the right corner for her second 3-pointer of the night, making it 42-41 with 7:44 left in regulation.
- Tañedo then had a steal on the defensive end to give Loyola a chance to take the lead, but the jumper missed for the Greyhounds. Neither Loyola, nor Holy Cross would score until Allen made the first of two at the line at 5:52, and the next frield goal was not until Allen converted with 4:29 on the clock. Kelly Petro then made two free throws with 3:44 left before Loyola brok a scoreless streak of 4:30 with a pull-up 3-pointer from the top of the perimeter by Taleah Dixon at 3:14.
- Dixon's conversion at the end of the shot clock got Loyola within three, 47-44, but it was as close as the Greyhounds would get the rest of the way.
- Dixon finished with 10 points, while Therien had nine to go with 11 rebounds.
- Ten of the 11 Greyhounds who saw minutes scored in the game with Edwards and Tañedo each contributing six.
Five Of A Kind
- Loyola's Lex Therien earned her second-consecutive Patriot League Rookie of the Week Award on Monday, her fifth such recognition this season after a double-double for the second week in a row. She scored 13.5 points and grabbing 10.0 rebounds per game in contests against Army West Point and Navy.
- Therien started the week with a 9-point, 10-rebound outing against Army West Point before she went for 18 and 10 Saturday against the Midshipmen. She also had a career-high-tying four steals at Navy.
- Entering this season, Loyola players had earned 15 Rookie of the Week Awards since the Greyhounds joined the Patriot League in 2013-14, a total that is up to 21 with Therien's Five and Laura Salmerón's one earlier this year. Five of the previous awards were bestowed upon Therien's older sister, Isabella, the 2017-18 conference Rookie of the Year.
Staying In It Late
- The Greyhounds have been tied, or held a lead, in the fourth quarter of 13 of their 22 games this season.
Doubled Up
- With her 10-point, 10-rebound game on January 15 against Lehigh, Lex Therien recorded her fourth-straight double-double. She is the first Loyola player to have four in a row in 11 years since Miriam McKenzie did it four games in a row from January 22-30, 2011.
- Therien recently wrapped up her second stretch of double doubles in at least three in a row. During the recent stretch against American, Colgate and Bucknell, she averaged 17.3 points and 12.7 rebounds while shooting 57.1 percent from the field.
- This season, she has 10 double-doubles, a total that ranks No. 3 in the Patriot League and 30th nationally.
Starting Suited Her
- Devyne Newman was in the Greyhounds starting five for the first time since January 17 last Wednesday afternoon against Army West Point, and the senior responded with her best statistical output of the season.
- Newman went 4 of 8 from the field and finished with a season-high 11 points in 25 minutes of action. She also grabbed seven rebounds, one off her previous season-best. Newman has since started the following two games.
Therien Among Tops In Nation In Rebounding
- Lex Therien has made an immediate impact in her debut season, and she now leads the Greyhounds in both points (12.1) and rebounds (10.5) per game.
- Her 10.5 rebounds per game are second in the Patriot League and are No. 26 in NCAA Division I this season. She also ranks No. 2 amongst freshmen nationally in rebounds per game, trailing only DePaul's Aneesah Morrow (13.5).
- Per HerHoopStats.com, Therien and Morrow are the only two freshmen in Division I averaging a double-double this season, and they are two of 36 players of all years to do so.
- Therien has grabbed 6+ rebounds in all but one contest this season, and she has 10 or more in 15 of 22 games. She has scored 10 or more points in 15 of 21.
Dixon Second In Scoring Average
- Taleah Dixon's 11.2 points per game are second on Loyola and rank 14th overall in the Patriot League. Dixon scored a season-high 23 points in a Dec. 4 win over Mount St. Mary's.
- In the Greyhounds' last five games, Dixon is playing her best since a stretch in late November-early December. With 68 points over the last four, she is averaging 13.6 points to go with 3.1 assists per game.
- Dixon also paces the Greyhounds in free throw percentage (87.7, 57-65). She is second among Patriot League shooters.
- Dixon is one of three team captains for Loyola this season, along with Laryn Edwards and Bri Rozzi.
'Ria Stepping Up
- Sophomore Charia Roberts saw limited action as a freshman during the shortened 2020-2021 season, playing in 13 games and averaging 3.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in 12.8 minutes per game.
- This season, however, Roberts has averaged 27.5 minutes per game while starting all but three contests, and she has responded with 7.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest.
- The Baltimore County native has scored eight or more points in 10 games, and she has grabbed five or more rebounds nine times.
Using the Opportunity
- Caramina Tañedo had played just 22 minutes over her previous seven appearances, but the sophomore made the most of extended playing time of the year to-date in the Greyhounds' Patriot League opener against Boston University.
- She equaled those 22 minutes and scored a career-high 12 points, making four of the six 3-pointers she attempted. Her 12 points eclipsed her previous high of eight from the Greyhounds' season-opener at Niagara where she scored eight.
- Tañedo has continued to earn more playing time for the Greyhounds and drew a season-high 36 minutes on January 22 against American. In that game, she grabbed a career-best nine rebounds.
Edwards Returns To Lineup
- The Greyhounds got a boost to their rotation on February 2 against Army West Point when Laryn Edwards returned to the lineup after missing the previous 11 games with an injury.
- Edwards saw 13 minutes of action against the Black Knights, her first since December 4 against Mount St. Mary's, and she finished with two points and two steals. She scored six points and grabbed a season-high six boards against Holy Cross.
- Over her career, Edwards has played in 58 games, starting 34, and has averaged 4.4 points and 1.8 assists per game.
