Colgate Ends Game of Runs With Fourth-Quarter Stretch To Beat Women’s Basketball

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Loyola University Maryland women's basketball used a 10-0 run to turn a 12-point halftime deficit into a two-point advantage at the end of the third quarter, but Colgate University finished the game with a 21-4 stretch to pull away for a 68-53 Patriot League win at Cotterell Court on Saturday afternoon.

Lex Therien, who fueled the Greyhounds' third-quarter comeback, logged her 11th double-double of the season, tying her career-high with 23 points and setting a new best with 17 rebounds.

Therien scored the third quarter's last six points on a layup and two jumpers, her field goal with 28 ticks left in the frame putting Loyola in front, 49-47, for the first time since the second quarter.

It wrapped up a quarter in which the freshman post player scored 16 points and had seven rebounds as Loyola outscored the Raiders, 23-9 to take back the lead.

Colgate's Taylor Golembiewski, however, hit a three and made a transition layup in the first 75 seconds of the fourth quarter to put the Raiders back in front. She would score 11 of her team-high 21 points in the first 6:08 of the fourth as Colgate built a 64-49 lead before Loyola scored in the period.

Loyola took an early lead in the game, going ahead 13-4 on a Taleah Dixon three with 5:08 to go in the first. Laryn Edwards' jumper at 3:28 in the first made it 15-4 Loyola, but Colgate scored the next seven to get within four at the 2:10 mark.

Therien converted a layup at 1:42, but McMahon had a three for Colgate 27 seconds later to make it a three-point game with 1:15 left in the quarter.

Dixon scored the Greyhounds' first six in the second quarter with her third basket making it 23-21 Greyhounds with 6:57 remaining.

Golembiewski tied it up with two free throws at 6:41, and she put Colgate in front at 5:27 with a three.

Dixon finished with 14 points, all in the first, half for the Greyhounds, while Golembiewski's 21 led three Colgate players in double-figures.

Loyola will be back in action on Wednesday, February 16, when it hosts Lafayette College at 7 p.m. in Reitz Arena.
