BALTIMORE – Lafayette College used a 15-3 run in the first quarter to open up a 15-point gap Wednesday night over Loyola University Maryland, and the Leopards went on to a 77-61 victory over the Greyhounds in a Patriot League game.
Devyne Newman's pull-up 15-footer 2:55 into the game made it 7-4 in Lafayette's favor, but Makayla Andrews scored just over a minute later to start the run that would stretch out the Leopards' lead.
Claire Gallagher hit a three for Lafayette at 2:59, extending the run to 10-1 before
Bri Rozzi made a left-side jumper 57 seconds later to provide the Greyhounds their first field goal in five minutes.
Kylie Favours, however, responded with a three for the Leopards, and Gallagher converted inside the arc to make it 22-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Loyola got within 11, 24-13, on a
Bella Steidle 3-pointer 1:58 into the second, but Lafayette would go up 18, 42-24, at halftime.
Favours hit another three 58 ticks into the fourth quarter, and the Lafayette lead was 20, 65-45, but Loyola would battle back to get to within 11, 65-54, on a traditional 3-point play by
Lex Therien with 7:18 left in regulation.
Abby Antognoli, who had a game-high 20 points, made a 3-pointer 11 seconds later, and the Leopards were up by at least 14 points the rest of the way.
Therien had her 12
th double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while
Taleah Dixon scored a team-high 14 points for the Greyhounds. Newman added nine, and Steidle had a career-high seven points.
Loyola continues its Patriot League schedule on Saturday, February 19, when it heads to Lehigh University for a 2 p.m. game.
