The Matchup

  • Loyola University Maryland women's basketball hots Lafayette College on Wednesday, February 16, in a 7 p.m. game at Reitz Arena.
  • The Greyhounds will celebrate Play 4 Kay, a night to raise awareness for breast cancer research and honor those who have fought the disease.

Last Time Out

  • Loyola women's basketball used a 10-0 run to turn a 12-point halftime deficit into a two-point advantage at the end of the third quarter, but Colgate finished the game with a 21-4 stretch to pull away for a 68-53 Patriot League win at Cotterell Court on Saturday afternoon.
  • Lex Therien, who fueled the Greyhounds' third-quarter comeback, logged her 11th double-double of the season, tying her career-high with 23 points and setting a new best with 17 rebounds. Therien scored the third quarter's last six points on a layup and two jumpers, her field goal with 28 ticks left in the frame putting Loyola in front, 49-47, for the first time since the second quarter.
  • It wrapped up a quarter in which the freshman post player scored 16 points and had seven rebounds as Loyola outscored the Raiders, 23-9 to take back the lead.
  • Colgate's Taylor Golembiewski, however, hit a three and made a transition layup in the first 75 seconds of the fourth quarter to put the Raiders back in front. She would score 11 of her team-high 21 points in the first 6:08 of the fourth as Colgate built a 64-49 lead before Loyola scored in the period.
  • Loyola took an early lead in the game, going ahead 13-4 on a Taleah Dixon three with 5:08 to go in the first. Laryn Edwards' jumper at 3:28 in the first made it 15-4 Loyola, but Colgate scored the next seven to get within four at the 2:10 mark.
  • Therien converted a layup at 1:42, but McMahon had a three for Colgate 27 seconds later to make it a three-point game with 1:15 left in the quarter. Dixon scored the Greyhounds' first six in the second quarter with her third basket making it 23-21 Greyhounds with 6:57 remaining.
  • Golembiewski tied it up with two free throws at 6:41, and she put Colgate in front at 5:27 with a three.
  • Dixon finished with 14 points, all in the first, half for the Greyhounds, while Golembiewski's 21 led three Colgate players in double-figures.

Five Of A Kind

  • Loyola's Lex Therien earned her second-consecutive Patriot League Rookie of the Week Award last Monday, her fifth such recognition this season after a double-double for the second week in a row. She scored 13.5 points and grabbing 10.0 rebounds per game in contests against Army West Point and Navy.
  • Therien started the week with a 9-point, 10-rebound outing against Army West Point before she went for 18 and 10 Saturday against the Midshipmen. She also had a career-high-tying four steals at Navy.
  • Entering this season, Loyola players had earned 15 Rookie of the Week Awards since the Greyhounds joined the Patriot League in 2013-14, a total that is up to 21 with Therien's Five and Laura Salmerón's one earlier this year. Less Than 20

  • Furthermore, she is the only Patriot League freshman to post those kind of single-game numbers since at least 2009-10 (dating back to the start of HerHoopStats.com's database).

Therien Among Tops In Nation In Rebounding

  • Lex Therien has made an immediate impact in her debut season, and she now leads the Greyhounds in both points (12.6) and rebounds (10.8) per game.
  • Her 10.8 rebounds per game are second in the Patriot League and are No. 21 in NCAA Division I this season. She also ranks No. 2 amongst freshmen nationally in rebounds per game, trailing only DePaul's Aneesah Morrow (13.5).

  • Looking at HerHoopStats.com's advanced metrics, Therien ranks eighth out of 3,356 players in Division I in defensive rebounding rate. She has grabbed 29.3 percent of available defensive rebounds this season. Her total rebound rate is No. 19 in Division I. Therien is first in the Patriot League in both categories.

  • Dixon also paces the Greyhounds in free throw percentage (87.7, 57-65). She is second among Patriot League shooters.
  • Dixon is one of three team captains for Loyola this season, along with Laryn Edwards and Bri Rozzi.

Doubled Up

  • With her 10-point, 10-rebound game on January 15 against Lehigh, Lex Therien recorded her fourth-straight double-double. She is the first Loyola player to have four in a row in 11 years since Miriam McKenzie did it four games in a row from January 22-30, 2011.
  • Therien recently wrapped up her second stretch of double doubles in at least three in a row. During the recent stretch against American, Colgate and Bucknell, she averaged 17.3 points and 12.7 rebounds while shooting 57.1 percent from the field.

'Ria Stepping Up

  • Sophomore Charia Roberts saw limited action as a freshman during the shortened 2020-2021 season, playing in 13 games and averaging 3.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in 12.8 minutes per game.
  • This season, however, Roberts has averaged 27.0 minutes per game while starting all but four contests, and she has responded with 7.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per contest.
  • The Baltimore County native has scored eight or more points in 10 games, and she has grabbed five or more rebounds nine times.

  • Tañedo has continued to earn more playing time for the Greyhounds and drew a season-high 36 minutes on January 22 against American. In that game, she grabbed a career-best nine rebounds.

Edwards Returns To Lineup

  • The Greyhounds got a boost to their rotation on February 2 against Army West Point when Laryn Edwards returned to the lineup after missing the previous 11 games with an injury.
  • Edwards saw 13 minutes of action against the Black Knights, her first since December 4 against Mount St. Mary's, and she finished with two points and two steals. She scored six points and grabbed a season-high six boards against Holy Cross.
