Last Time Out
- Therien posted her 13th double-double of the season, and senior Devyne Newman scored a season-high 15 points, the Loyola women's basketball team couldn't overcome some Lehigh's long-range shooting in a 73-49 loss at Stabler Arena on Saturday afternoon.
- The Mountain Hawks broke the game opening in the second quarter when they outscored Loyola by a 21-7 margin. Lehigh entered the period by a 19-16 lead and made six of eight three-pointers to take control of the contest. The Mountain Hawks owned a 40-23 lead at halftime. Lehigh, which made 17 of 33 three-point attempts in the win, extended its lead to 60-37 after three quarters. As a team, Lehigh shot 47.2 per cent from the field in the win.
- Therien, who led the Greyhounds with 16 points and 11 rebounds, recorded her 13th double-double of the season while shooting six-for-12 from the floor. Therien has recorded double-doubles in 11 Patriot League games. Newman also scored a season-high 15 points against Lehigh, making seven of 11 shots from the floor.
- In the game at Lehigh, Loyola played a strong first quarter and only trailed by 19-16 after the first quarter. The Greyhounds made seven of their 15 shots in the quarter. However, the Mountain Hawks opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run before Bri Rozzi nailed a three-pointer to make it 28-19. But, MacKenzie Kramer made her third three-pointer of the quarter to give Lehigh a 40-23 advantage at the half.
- Kramer led the Mountain Hawks with 23 points in the win. She made 8 of 15 shots from the floor and was 7-for-11 from three-point range. The second-leading scorer in the Patriot League, Kramer leads the league in field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage. Senior forward Emma Grothaus added 13 points and a team high seven rebounds for Lehigh. Emma Stemmer chipped in with 11 points and Meghan O'Brien tallied 10 points. Rozzi added seven points for Loyola.
Chart Climbing
- Freshman Lex Therien is climbing the Loyola single-season leader charts with her strong rebounding this season. Through 25 games this season, her 269 rebounds rank fifth in Loyola's single-season history, and with five more she'll pass Stephanie Karcz's 2019-2020 mark of 272 for fourth. Karcz also holds the school record of 317 from the 2017-18 season.
- Her average of 10.2 rebounds per game are second-most, behind only the mark of 10.6 set in 2017-2018 by Stephanie Karcz. Therien has grabbed 83 offensive rebounds this season, seventh in school history, while her 186 defensive boards are fifth.
Five Of A Kind
- Loyola's Lex Therien earned her second-consecutive Patriot League Rookie of the Week Award on February 14, her fifth such recognition this season after a double-double for the second week in a row. She scored 13.5 points and grabbing 10.0 rebounds per game in contests against Army West Point and Navy.
- Therien started the week with a 9-point, 10-rebound outing against Army West Point before she went for 18 and 10 Saturday against the Midshipmen. She also had a career-high-tying four steals at Navy.
- Entering this season, Loyola players had earned 15 Rookie of the Week Awards since the Greyhounds joined the Patriot League in 2013-14, a total that is up to 21 with Therien's Five and Laura Salmerón's one earlier this year. Five of the previous awards were bestowed upon Therien's older sister, Isabella, the 2017-18 conference Rookie of the Year.
Less Than 20
- Lex Therien became one of 20 players in NCAA Division I this season to have 23 or more points and 17 or more rebounds in a game, per HerHoopStats.com, when she posted those numbers at Colgate on February 12.
- Furthermore, she is the only Patriot League freshman to post those kind of single-game numbers since at least 2009-10 (dating back to the start of HerHoopStats.com's database).
Therien Among Tops In Nation In Rebounding
- Lex Therien has made an immediate impact in her debut season, and she now leads the Greyhounds in both points (12.7) and rebounds (10.8) per game.
- Her 10.8 rebounds per game are second in the Patriot League and are No. 21 in NCAA Division I this season. She also ranks No. 2 amongst freshmen nationally in rebounds per game, trailing only DePaul's Aneesah Morrow (13.8).
- Per HerHoopStats.com, Therien and Morrow are the only two freshmen in Division I averaging a double-double this season, and they are two of 35 players of all years to do so.
- Looking at HerHoopStats.com's advanced metrics, Therien ranks eighth out of 3,356 players in Division I in defensive rebounding rate. She has grabbed 29.7 percent of available defensive rebounds this season. Her total rebound rate is No. 17 in Division I. Therien is first in the Patriot League in both categories.
- Therien has grabbed 6+ rebounds in all but one contest this season, and she has 10 or more in 18 of 25 games. She has scored 10 or more points in 18 of 25 , as well.
Starting Suited Her
- Devyne Newman was in the Greyhounds starting five for the first time since January 17 against Army West Point, and the senior responded with her best statistical output of the season.
- Newman went 4 of 8 from the field and finished with a then-season-high 11 points in 25 minutes of action. She also grabbed seven rebounds, one off her previous season-best.
- Newman has continued her solid play as a starter, averaging 7.7 points over the last six games. She scored a career-high 15 points on 7 of 11 shooting on February 19 at Lehigh.
Dixon Second In Scoring Average
- Taleah Dixon's 11.1 points per game are second on Loyola and rank 15th overall in the Patriot League. Dixon scored a season-high 23 points in a Dec. 4 win over Mount St. Mary's.
- In the Greyhounds' last eight games, Dixon is playing her best since a stretch in late November-early December. With 96 points over the last seven, she is averaging 12.4 points to go with 3.3 assists per game.
- Dixon also paces the Greyhounds in free throw percentage (87.7, 57-65). She is second among Patriot League shooters.
- Dixon is one of three team captains for Loyola this season, along with Laryn Edwards and Bri Rozzi.
Doubled Up
- With her 10-point, 10-rebound game on January 15 against Lehigh, Lex Therien recorded her fourth-straight double-double. She is the first Loyola player to have four in a row in 11 years since Miriam McKenzie did it four games in a row from January 22-30, 2011.
- Therien is currently only another stretch of three-straight double-doubels in a row, and she now has 13 total this year. That ranks No. 3 in the Patriot League and 18th overall this season. Of those 13, 11 have come in Loyola's 15 Patriot League games.
'Ria Stepping Up
- Sophomore Charia Roberts saw limited action as a freshman during the shortened 2020-2021 season, playing in 13 games and averaging 3.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in 12.8 minutes per game.
- This season, however, Roberts has averaged 26.3 minutes per game while starting all but six contests, and she has responded with 7.0 points and 4.2 rebounds per contest.
- The Baltimore County native has scored eight or more points in 10 games, and she has grabbed five or more rebounds 10 times.
Using the Opportunity
- Caramina Tañedo had played just 22 minutes over her previous seven appearances, but the sophomore made the most of extended playing time of the year to-date in the Greyhounds' Patriot League opener against Boston University.
- She equaled those 22 minutes and scored a career-high 12 points, making four of the six 3-pointers she attempted. Her 12 points eclipsed her previous high of eight from the Greyhounds' season-opener at Niagara where she scored eight.
- Tañedo has continued to earn more playing time for the Greyhounds and drew a season-high 36 minutes on January 22 against American. In that game, she grabbed a career-best nine rebounds.
Edwards Returns To Lineup
- The Greyhounds got a boost to their rotation on February 2 against Army West Point when Laryn Edwards returned to the lineup after missing the previous 11 games with an injury.
- Edwards saw 13 minutes of action against the Black Knights, her first since December 4 against Mount St. Mary's, and she finished with two points and two steals. She scored six points and grabbed a season-high six boards against Holy Cross.
- Over her career, Edwards has played in 61 games, starting 37, and has averaged 4.3 points and 1.8 assists per game.
