BALTIMORE –
Devyne Newman scored 14 points to lead five Loyola University Maryland women's basketball players who had eight or more on Wednesday as the Greyhounds defeated the visiting U.S. Naval Academy, 56-42, in a Patriot League game in Reitz Arena.
Newman had six first-quarter points as Loyola jumped out to a 15-11 lead, and she was joined in double-figures by
Taleah Dixon (12) and
Charia Roberts (10).
Bri Rozzi added nine points and four assists, while
Lex Therien scored eight while tying her career-high with 17 rebounds. Therien's 17 rebounds are tied for eighth-most in school single-game history.
The Greyhounds held Navy (7-19 overall, 4-12 Patriot League) to 34 percent shooting from the field and 17.4 percent from 3-point range while outrebounding the Midshipmen, 40-23.
Loyola (5-21, 2-14) grew its four-point lead at the start of the second quarter to 12, 29-17, on two Therien free throws at 3:02, but Navy cut it back to eight, 29-21, at halftime.
Rozzi came out and scored the second half's first six points on a transition layup, one of two at the free throw line and then a 3-pointer at 8:05 that made it 35-21 Loyola.
Navy did not score for the first eight minutes, 15 seconds of the third quarter, and a Newman basket at 4:25 pushed the Loyola lead to 38-21. The Midshipmen pulled back within 13 on a Darryl Langford layup with 38 seconds left in the stanza, but Dixon scored with 11 seconds left to give Loyola a 42-27 cushion going into the fourth.
The Midshipmen's press helped them get as close as six, 48-42, with under two minutes to play, but Dixon and Roberts each went 4 of 4 at the free-throw line in the final 80 seconds to secure the victory.
Loyola closes its regular-season home schedule on Saturday, February 26, when it hosts American University at 4 p.m.
