The Matchup

  • Loyola University Maryland women's basketball plays its final home game of the 2021-2022 regular-season on Saturday, February 26, when it hosts American University in a 4 p.m. game.
  • The game will stream live on ESPN+ from Reitz Arena.

Saluting Seniors

  • Following Saturday's game, the Greyhounds will recognize the three members of its Class of 2022 – Taleah Dixon, Laryn Edwards and Devyne Newman – in a postagme ceremony.
  • Dixon and Edwards joined the program in 2018-19, and Newman came to the Greyhounds as a transfer before the 2020-21 season. Together, they have combined for 1,100 points, 383 rebounds, 286 assists and 144 steals during their time on the Evergreen campus.

Last Time Out

  • Devyne Newman scored 14 points to lead five Loyola players who had eight or more on Wednesday as the Greyhounds defeated the visiting Navy, 56-42, in a Patriot League game in Reitz Arena.
  • Newman had six first-quarter points as Loyola jumped out to a 15-11 lead, and she was joined in double-figures by Taleah Dixon (12) and Charia Roberts (10).
  • Bri Rozzi added nine points and four assists, while Lex Therien scored eight while tying her career-high with 17 rebounds. Therien's 17 rebounds are tied for eighth-most in school single-game history.
  • The Greyhounds held Navy to 34 percent shooting from the field and 17.4 percent from 3-point range while outrebounding the Midshipmen, 40-23.
  • Loyola grew its four-point lead at the start of the second quarter to 12, 29-17, on two Therien free throws at 3:02, but Navy cut it back to eight, 29-21, at halftime.
  • Rozzi came out and scored the second half's first six points on a transition layup, one of two at the free throw line and then a 3-pointer at 8:05 that made it 35-21 Loyola. Navy did not score for the first eight minutes, 15 seconds of the third quarter, and a Newman basket at 4:25 pushed the Loyola lead to 38-21. The Midshipmen pulled back within 13 on a Darryl Langford layup with 38 seconds left in the stanza, but Dixon scored with 11 seconds left to give Loyola a 42-27 cushion going into the fourth.
  • The Midshipmen's press helped them get as close as six, 48-42, with under two minutes to play, but Dixon and Roberts each went 4 of 4 at the free-throw line in the final 80 seconds to secure the victory.
Chart Climbing
  • Freshman Lex Therien is climbing the Loyola single-season leader charts with her strong rebounding this season. After matching her season-high with 17 rebounds on February 23 against Navy, Therien now has 286 boards this season, good for second in school single-season history, one more than Patty Stoffey's 1994-95 mark of 285. Stephanie Karcz holds the school record of 317 rebounds in a season.
  • Therien now leads the Patriot League with 11.0 rebounds per game, an average that would be a new school record in front of the mark of 10.6 set in 2017-2018 by Karcz.
Five Of A Kind
  • Loyola's Lex Therien earned her second-consecutive Patriot League Rookie of the Week Award on February 14, her fifth such recognition this season after a double-double for the second week in a row. She scored 13.5 points and grabbing 10.0 rebounds per game in contests against Army West Point and Navy.
  • Therien started the week with a 9-point, 10-rebound outing against Army West Point before she went for 18 and 10 Saturday against the Midshipmen. She also had a career-high-tying four steals at Navy.
  • Entering this season, Loyola players had earned 15 Rookie of the Week Awards since the Greyhounds joined the Patriot League in 2013-14, a total that is up to 21 with Therien's Five and Laura Salmerón's one earlier this year. Five of the previous awards were bestowed upon Therien's older sister, Isabella, the 2017-18 conference Rookie of the Year.
One of 20
  • Lex Therien became one of 20 players in NCAA Division I this season to have 23 or more points and 17 or more rebounds in a game, per HerHoopStats.com, when she posted those numbers at Colgate on February 12.
  • Furthermore, she is the only Patriot League freshman to post those kind of single-game numbers since at least 2009-10 (dating back to the start of HerHoopStats.com's database).
Therien Among Tops In Nation In Rebounding
  • Lex Therien has made an immediate impact in her debut season, and she now leads the Greyhounds in both points (12.5) and rebounds (11.0) per game.

  • Per HerHoopStats.com, Therien and Morrow are the only two freshmen in Division I averaging a double-double this season, and they are two of 35 players of all years to do so.
  • Looking at HerHoopStats.com's advanced metrics, Therien ranks fifth out of 3,356 players in Division I in defensive rebounding rate. She has grabbed 30.5 percent of available defensive rebounds this season. Her total rebound rate is No. 12 in Division I. Therien is first in the Patriot League in both categories.
  • Therien has grabbed 6+ rebounds in all but one contest this season, and she has 10 or more in 19 of 26 games. She has scored 10 or more points in 18 of 26 , as well.\

  • Devyne Newman was in the Greyhounds starting five for the first time since January 17 against Army West Point, and the senior responded with her best statistical output of the season.
  • Newman went 4 of 8 from the field and finished with a then-season-high 11 points in 25 minutes of action. She also grabbed seven rebounds, one off her previous season-best.
  • Newman has continued her solid play as a starter, averaging 8.5 points over the last seven games. She scored a season-high 15 points on 7 of 11 shooting on February 19 at Lehigh and followed it with 14 on February 23 versus Navy.
Dixon Second In Scoring Average
  • Taleah Dixon's 11.2 points per game are second on Loyola and rank 11th overall in the Patriot League. Dixon scored a season-high 23 points in a Dec. 4 win over Mount St. Mary's.
  • In the Greyhounds' last nine games, Dixon is playing her best since a stretch in late November-early December. With 108 points over the last nine, she is averaging 12.0 points to go with 3.2 assists per game.
  • Her averages of 11.2 points, 2.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game this season are career highs for Dixon.
  • Dixon also paces the Greyhounds in free throw percentage (87.3, 62-71). She is second among Patriot League shooters.
  • Dixon is one of three team captains for Loyola this season, along with Laryn Edwards and Bri Rozzi.
Doubled Up
  • With her 10-point, 10-rebound game on January 15 against Lehigh, Lex Therien recorded her fourth-straight double-double. She is the first Loyola player to have four in a row in 11 years since Miriam McKenzie did it four games in a row from January 22-30, 2011.
  • Therien is currently only another stretch of three-straight double-doubels in a row, and she now has 13 total this year. That ranks No. 3 in the Patriot League and 18th overall this season. Of those 13, 11 have come in Loyola's 16 Patriot League games.
'Ria Stepping Up
  • Sophomore Charia Roberts saw limited action as a freshman during the shortened 2020-2021 season, playing in 13 games and averaging 3.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in 12.8 minutes per game.
  • This season, however, Roberts has averaged 26.0 minutes per game while starting all but seven contests, and she has responded with 7.1 points and 4.2 rebounds per contest.
  • The Baltimore County native has scored eight or more points in 11 games, and she has grabbed five or more rebounds 10 times.
