Verheyen Wins 100 Breaststroke At ECAC Championships

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Loyola University Maryland junior Max Verheyen became the swimming and diving team's first ECAC Champion since 2017 when he won the 100-yard breaststroke on Saturday night at the U.S. Naval Academy.
 
Verheyen was first to the wall by more than 1.5 seconds, winning in 53.33 in front of Navy's Daniel Cashell (54.85). His title is the first since Ben Cono won the same event in 2017 en route to being named the ECAC Male Swimmer of the Meet.
 
Through two days, the Loyola men's team is sixth out of 18 teams, and the women are seventh out of the same number.
 
Patrick Hayburn had a podium finish for the second-straight night, taking third in the 100-yard butterfly (48.90), a day after he was third in the 50-yard freestyle.
 
The Greyhounds had several solid performances in the diving events, as Anna Donato capped her career with a second-place finish in the 1-meter women's event, scoring 233.7 points. Mya Sharkey was sixth with 208.95, and Lily Bistline took eighth with 194.9. Jack Still had a fourth-place finish for the men in the 3-meter event with 270.6 points.
 
Lily Mead finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke on the women's side, clocking a time of 1:03.30.
 
Zach Reid went 1:39.81 in the men's 200-yard freestyle for a sixth-place finish, and Matt Gray was 11th in the 400-yard individual medley (4:06.41). Tie Manuel then was 13th in the 100-yard backstroke (51.70).
 
In relay action, the men's 800-yard freestyle group of Reid, Greg Sifferman, Tommy Noone and Jonah Goodman was fifth in 6:50.79; Manuel, Brian Hess, Jared Copeland and Joe Zellner finished sixth in the men's 200-yard medley relay in 1:32.19.
 
Maggie Manchester, Emily Colyar, Sarah Abril and Carolina Suarez finished eighth in the women's 800-yard freestyle relay in 7:57.35, and the women's 200-yard medley relay group of Manchester, Avery Stimmel, Michelle Lebed and Remmi Shaw turned in a ninth-place finish in 1:49.61.
 
The three-day event concludes on Sunday with morning preliminaries beginning at 9 o'clock and finals commencing at 4 p.m.
