The Matchup

  • Loyola University Maryland women's basketball heads to Annapolis, Maryland, for a nearby road game at the U.S. Naval Academy on Saturday, February 5.
  • The action will stream live on ESPN+ with a 4 p.m. tipoff in Alumni Hall.

Last Time Out

  • Loyola built a 10-point second-quarter lead and was up, 31-25, at halftime over Army West Point, but the Black Knights scored the second half's first eight points and eventually overcame the Greyhounds for a 63-57 victory on Wednesday afternoon in Reitz Arena.
  • Three Greyhounds scored in double figures, led by 11 each from Charia Roberts and Devyne Newman; Taleah Dixon added 10, while Lex Therien and Bri Rozzi each had nine.
  • A three by Army West Point's Natalie Rhine with 4:15 to go in the second quarter cut Loyola's lead to five, 24-19, but Rozzi splashed a three for the Greyhounds, and a Roberts steal turned into a Dixon layup to make the advantage 10, 29-19, with 3:18 on the clock.
  • The Black Knights got the deficit down to four on a Lindsey Scamman free throw with 1:15 to go before halftime, but Newman made two free throws as part of her season-high 11 points with 27 ticks on the clock, and the Greyhounds were up six.
  • Free throws by Sabrina Hunter, a second-chance putback by Kate Murray and a Kamryn Hall transition layup tied the score at 31-31 just 1:28 into the second half, forcing a Loyola timeout. Hunter then converted an and-one at 7:47 to put Army West Point up three, but Caramina Tañedo hit a three from deep in the left corner 47 seconds later, and Loyola was tied at 34-34.
  • Army West Point took a six-point lead, 46-40, into the quarter break, but Rozzi cut the deficit to three with a layup at 9:07. Dixon then used a high ball screen on the top-right of the perimeter to get to the basket for an and-one at 7:47, knotting the game at 46-46.
  • Murray put Army West Point up a pair with a basket at 6:35, but Newman took a Rozzi pass and hit a three from the left side at 6:09, giving Loyola a 49-48 lead as Army West Point called a timeout.
  • Hunter, Rhine and Alisa Fallon had consecutive baskets for the Black Knights, and they were back up five with 5:11 on the clock, but Therien converted a Rozzi offensive board into a basket at 3:53, and Lauryn Edwards had a steal and fast-break bucket at 3:27, pulling Loyola within a point, 56-55.
  • That is where the margin stayed until Sam McNaughton hit a three from the left side for the Black Knights at 1:09, staking them to a four-point lead which would remain at that level or higher for the remainder of the game.
Staying In It Late
  • The Greyhounds have been tied, or held a lead, in the fourth quarter of 12 of their 20 games this season.
Doubled Up
  • With her 10-point, 10-rebound game on January 15 against Lehigh, Lex Therien recorded her fourth-straight double-double. She is the first Loyola player to have four in a row in 11 years since Miriam McKenzie did it four games in a row from January 22-30, 2011.
  • Therien recently wrapped up her second stretch of double doubles in at least three in a row. During the recent stretch against American, Colgate and Bucknell, she averaged 17.3 points and 12.7 rebounds while shooting 57.1 percent from the field.
  • This season, she has nine double-doubles, a total that ranks No. 3 in the Patriot League and 29th nationally.
Starting Suited Her
  • Devyne Newman was in the Greyhounds starting five for the first time since January 17 on Wednesday afternoon against Army West Point, and the senior responded with her best statistical output of the season.
  • Newman went 4 of 8 from the field and finished with a season-high 11 points in 25 minutes of action. She also grabbed seven rebounds, one off her previous season-best.
Therien Among Tops In Nation In Rebounding
  • Lex Therien has made an immediate impact in her debut season, and she now leads the Greyhounds in both points (12.0) and rebounds (10.5) per game.
  • Her 10.5 rebounds per game are second in the Patriot League and are No. 26 in NCAA Division I this season. She also ranks No. 2 amongst freshmen nationally in rebounds per game, trailing only DePaul's Aneesah Morrow (13.4).
  • Per HerHoopStats.com, Therien and Morrow are the only two freshmen in Division I averaging a double-double this season, and they are two of 36 players of all years to do so.
  • Therien has grabbed 6+ rebounds in all but one contest this season, and she has 10 or more in 13 of 20 games. She has scored 10 or more points in 14 of 20 .
Dixon Second In Scoring Average
  • Taleah Dixon's 11.1 points per game are second on Loyola and rank 14th overall in the Patriot League. Dixon scored a season-high 23 points (8-16 FG, 3-7 3FG) in a Dec. 4 win over Mount St. Mary's. In the last two games, Dixon has averaged 15.5 points against Colgate and Bucknell.
  • Dixon also paces the Greyhounds in free throw percentage (87.9, 51-58). She is second among Patriot League shooters and 24th nationally in FT%.
  • Dixon is one of three team captains for Loyola this season, along with Laryn Edwards and Bri Rozzi.
'Ria Stepping Up
  • Sophomore Charia Roberts saw limited action as a freshman during the shortened 2020-2021 season, playing in 13 games and averaging 3.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in 12.8 minutes per game.
  • This season, however, Roberts has averaged 27.9 minutes per game while starting all but one contest and she has responded with 8.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per contest.
  • The Baltimore County native has scored eight or more points in 10 games, and she has grabbed five or more rebounds nine times.
Using the Opportunity
  • Caramina Tañedo had played just 22 minutes over her previous seven appearances, but the sophomore made the most of extended playing time of the year to-date in the Greyhounds' Patriot League opener against Boston University.
  • She equaled those 22 minutes and scored a career-high 12 points, making four of the six 3-pointers she attempted. Her 12 points eclipsed her previous high of eight from the Greyhounds' season-opener at Niagara where she scored eight.
  • Tañedo has continued to earn more playing time for the Greyhounds and drew a season-high 36 minutes on January 22 against American. In that game, she grabbed a career-best nine rebounds.
Worth Noting
  • With her 23 points on Dec. 4 against the Mount, Taleah Dixon totaled 20+ points for the fourth time in her collegiate career, and the first time since she had a career-best 26 during the 2019 Patriot League quarterfinals at Bucknell.
  • Loyola's 63-57 win over UMBC on Nov. 17 was the program's first victory after trailing by 14+ points in the second half since Feb. 10, 2012 vs. Iona (66-60).
  • Loyola's overtime victory over FDU on Nov. 14 was the program's first in extra time since Jan. 2, 2017 at Lafayette. The Greyhounds are now 3-9 in OT dating back to March 4, 2011.
