The Matchup
- Loyola University Maryland women's basketball heads on the road for its final game of the 2021-2022 regular-season on Wednesday, March 2, when it heads to the Hudson Valley to face the U.S. Military Academy.
- The game will stream live on ESPN+ from Christl Arena with a 6 p.m. tipoff.
Last Time Out
- Jade Edwards gave American University a one-point lead with less than five seconds to play on Saturday, and the Eagles use their only lead of the game to depart Reitz Arena with a 49-48 Patriot League victory over host Loyola.
- The Greyhounds led for more than 37 minutes of the contest, and almost all of the other two-plus minutes were tied scored. Loyola was up 48-47 in the final 15 seconds before Edwards' winning layup.
- Loyola led by as many as 11 points early in the second half, and it took a 43-34 lead into the fourth after Bri Rozzi scored on a jumper with 53 ticks left in the third. Edwards made a three at 6:55, and the Loyola lead was down to three, 43-40, but Taleah Dixon banked in a three at 6:08, and the advantage was back to six.
- Emily Johns converted a three from the top of the perimeter for the Eagles at 4:11, and Emily Fisher made 1 of 2 at the line to draw American within two, 46-44, at 3:40. Both teams came up with defensive stops for over two minutes before Edwards was fouled in the paint. She also made 1 of 2 from the charity stripe, and that narrowed the Eagles' deficit to a single point, 46-45, with 62 seconds left.
- The Greyhounds used nearly all of the shot clock on their ensuing possession, and Devyne Newman drove the baseline on the right side, getting clear for a layup with 32 ticks on the clock, putting Loyola back up by three. Edwards, however, was good on a driving layup 14 seconds later, and the Greyhounds called a timeout to move the ball into the frontcourt. American needed to foul three times before it sent Loyola to the line, and both Greyhounds free throws rimmed out with 11 seconds left. Fisher grabbed the rebound for the Eagles and called timeout, again advancing the ball.
- Edwards isolated outside of the high post and drove into traffic, but she split two defenders to get a layup off that found the net to put American in front for the only time in the game. A desperation running three for Loyola did not fall, and the Eagles secure the win.
- Newman was one of two Greyhounds to score 11 points in the game. She reached double-figures for the third game in a row, and Laryn Edwards hit for 11, a season-high. Lex Therien scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed a game-best 14 rebounds for her 14th double-doubles of the year.
Chart Climbing
- Freshman Lex Therien is climbing the Loyola single-season leader charts with her strong rebounding this season. After grabbing 14 rebounds Saturday against American, Therien now has 300 boards this season, good for second in school single-season history. Stephanie Karcz holds the school record of 317 rebounds in a season.
- Therien now leads the Patriot League with 11.1 rebounds per game, an average that would be a new school record in front of the mark of 10.6 set in 2017-2018 by Karcz.
Five Of A Kind
- Loyola's Lex Therien was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year for the sixth time this season in a span of 16 weeks. She posted eight points and tied her career-high with 17 rebounds Wednesday night as the Greyhounds downed Navy. Therien then made 7 of 8 shots from the field and scored 14 points while grabbing 14 rebounds Saturday afternoon versus American.
- Entering this season, Loyola players had earned 15 Rookie of the Week Awards since the Greyhounds joined the Patriot League in 2013-14, a total that is up to 22 with Therien's six and Laura Salmerón's one earlier this year. Five of the previous awards were bestowed upon Therien's older sister, Isabella, the 2017-18 conference Rookie of the Year.
- Therien has received the award more than all but six players in Patriot League history, and her six Rookie of the Week honors are the most since Bucknell's Claire DeBoer earned the recognition eight times during the 2013-14 season.
One of 20
- Lex Therien became one of 20 players in NCAA Division I this season to have 23 or more points and 17 or more rebounds in a game, per HerHoopStats.com, when she posted those numbers at Colgate on February 12.
- Furthermore, she is the only Patriot League freshman to post those kind of single-game numbers since at least 2009-10 (dating back to the start of HerHoopStats.com's database).
Therien Among Tops In Nation In Rebounding

Starting Suited Her
- Devyne Newman was in the Greyhounds starting five for the first time since January 17 against Army West Point, and the senior responded with her best statistical output of the season.
- Newman went 4 of 8 from the field and finished with a then-season-high 11 points in 25 minutes of action. She also grabbed seven rebounds, one off her previous season-best.
- Newman has continued her solid play as a starter, averaging 8.9 points over the last eight games. She scored a season-high 15 points on 7 of 11 shooting on February 19 at Lehigh and followed it with 14 on February 23 versus Navy and 11 against American.

Doubled Up

- Therien is currently only another stretch of three-straight double-doubels in a row, and she now has 13 total this year. That ranks No. 3 in the Patriot League and 18th overall this season. Of those 13, 11 have come in Loyola's 16 Patriot League games.
Edwards Returns To Lineup
