BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland's men's and women's tennis teams dodged rain drops while playing Morgan State University on Thursday afternoon at the McClure Tennis Center. The Bears' men's team edged the Greyhounds, 5-2, while the women's match ended in a 3-3 draw when called due to wet court conditions.
Edik Pribitkin and
Matt Cardano picked up the men's points with wins at No. 2 and 3 singles.
Pribitkin prevailed, 6-2, 6-1, against the Bears' Makkijha Brown, while Cardano was a 6-2, 7-6 (6) winner against Rhajzon Rankins in the third spot.
The duo also teamed for a win at No. 2 doubles for the Greyhounds, beating Morgan State's Martial Kawunde and Sebastian Lopez, 6-3. The Bears, however, took the other two doubles matches as Mikeal Carpenter and Nihit Rawal beat
Skyler Gates and
George Cavo, 6-3, at No. 1, and Rankins and Niles Rachal beat
Liam Rompere and
Oliver Davey, 7-5 at No. 3.
Carpenter defeated Gates in a tight No. 1 singles match, 7-5, 6-4, and Rawal topped Cavo, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4. Rachal beat Rompere, 6-4, 6-0 in a No. 5 match, and Lopez was a 6-1, 6-4, winner at No. 6 singles against
Ryan Boland.
On the women's side, Loyola took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3.
Olivia Tracey and
Genevieve Wurtz captured a 6-2 decision at No. 1 over Nolween Cardoso and Stefania Moysiadi.
Abby Decker and
Sandra Aguirre were 6-4 winners at No. 3 against Anabel Aran and Hannah Smith. Morgan State's Asmara Rose and Averiana Mitchell topped the Greyhounds' Lauren Mawiller and
Jessica Bodewes, 6-2, at No. 2.
Tracey eased to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Ana-Lei Kalawe, but Morgan State picked up points at No. 2 and 3 singles. Hannah Smith was a 6-2, 6-0, winner against Manwiller, at No. 2, and Mitchell edged Bodewes, 6-4, 7-6 (5) at No. 3.
Decker beat Rose in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4, but Morgan State evened the match with Moysiadi win, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, versus Wurtz at No. 6.
The final match of the 4-hour, 30-minute competition finished as an unfinished draw. Aguirre lost the first set, 6-0, to Nolween Cardoso, but she rallied to win the second, 6-4. The players were even at 4-4 in the third set, with Aguirre leading the next point, 30-love.
The Greyhounds to head to West Point, N.Y., for a trio of matches this weekend, starting on Saturday.
