SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. –
Brandon Berry was the only golfer in a field of 108 individuals to shoot under par for three-straight rounds, and the Loyola University Maryland player finished third overall at the Donald Ross Collegiate Classic.
Berry shot 5-under 211 over 54 holes to lead the Greyhounds to a fourth-place finish as a team at the event.
The graduate student birdied the first, fourth and ninth holes on the par-72 Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club course and made the turn in Tuesday's second round at 1-under before stringing together six-straight pars through the 16
th.
He then birdied the 16
th hole to briefly move into a tie for first place before a bogey on the 17
th set him back to 1-under for the day where he finished.
Berry had his third top-three finish of the season with the third place showing in North Carolina. In the fall, he won the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate and took second at the Georgetown Intercollegiate. He now has 16 rounds of par or better in 21 collegiate rounds during the 2021-2022 campaign.
Jackson Roman made the biggest move of the day for a Loyola player, carding a 2-under 70 to rise 19 spots for the best finish of his young collegiate career. Aided by five birdies on Tuesday, Roman came in with a tie for 21
st at 6-over 222 for the tournament.
Carlo Pizzano started with two birdies on the course's first five holes before finishing at 3-over 75 Tuesday to tie for 31
st at 9-over 225.
Matt Malits and
Nick Mejia tied for 62
nd and 66
th, respectively, with 54-hole scores of 15-over and 16-over. Mejia had his best round of the tournament in the final round with a 3-over 75.
Trent Geritz competed as an individual and tied for 92
nd in his first tournament of the year.
The Greyhounds will head to Florida next week for the Southern Intercollegiate at The Falls Club on March 14 and 15 in Palm Beach.
