VILLANOVA, Pa. –
Abby Decker and
Genevieve Wurtz all won three-set matches Saturday, lifting the Loyola University Maryland women's tennis team to a 5-2 win over host Villanova University.
The Greyhounds men lost several close matches and fell, 6-1, to the Wildcats.
The Loyola women opened up an early 1-0 lead in the match with the doubles point, winning at No. 2 and No. 3.
Lauren Manwiller and
Jessica Bodewes were 6-4 winners against Sabina Grigorian and Valieriia Kornieva at No. 2, while Decker and Wurtz beat Olivia Kapp and Caitlin Fisher, 7-5, at No. 3. Villanova's Annalise Klopfer and Emma Brogan were 6-2 winners over
Olivia Tracey and
Anna Rico at No. 1 doubles.
Tracey eased to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Brogan at No. 1 singles, and Bodewes was a 6-4, 6-3 victor against Bella Steffen at No. 4.
Caitlin Fisher edged Manwiller, 6-4, 2-6, 6-0, at No. 2 singles, picking up a point for Villanova, and Kornieva beat Rico, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3.
Decker and Wurtz then used three sets to score wins for the Greyhounds at No. 5 and 6 singles. Decker beat Olivia Kapp, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, and Wurtz topped Chloe Floyd, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, at No. 6.
In the men's match,
Edik Pribitkin picked up the point for the Greyhounds, beating Justin Suarez, 6-4, 7-6 (6) at No. 2 singles.
Suarez and Matthew Jones topped
Skyler Gates and
George Cavo, 6-0, at No. 1 doubles, and Anthony Prokuart and Trey Forticq beat Pribitkin and
Matt Cardano, 6-2, at No. 2. Josh Robinson and Noah Winton edged
Liam Rompere and
Oliver Davey, 7-5, at No. 3.
Gates battled Robinson to three sets at No. 1 singles, but Robinson came away with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory. Fourticq beat Cardano, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 3, and Jones was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Cavo at No. 4. Prookuart got by Rompere, 6-3, 6-4, and Ryan Nguyen used a super-tiebreaker in the third to beat
Ryan Boland, 6-4, 4-6, (10-6).
