BALTIMORE – The Loyola University Maryland men's and women's teams took on intra-state rival Mount St. Mary's University on Wednesday afternoon with the womens' team coming out on top, 5-2, but the men slipping by the same score.
Olivia Tracey and
Anna Rico earned a 6-2 win over Amber Policare and Adriana Barney at No. 1 doubles, and
Abby Decker and
Genevieve Wurtz then secured the point with a 7-6 (6) win at No. 3 over Ana Alvarez-Storni and Ryan McCarthy.
In singles play, the top four matches all went to three sets with both teams prevailing twice.
Policare edged Tracey, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1, and Shirley Liang was a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 winner over
Lauren Manwiller at No. 2, but those were the Mountaineers only points.
Rico beat Adriana Barney, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, at No. 3, and
Jessica Bodewes was a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victor against Rita Mathur at No. 4. Decker then beat Alvarez-Stroni, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5, and Wurtz was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over McCarthy at No. 6.
Mount St. Mary's took the men's doubles point behind a couple of close wins.
Liam Rompere and
Oliver Davey edged Jarrett Karnibad and Marcel Cronin, 7-6 (3) to give the Greyhounds life in doubles, but the Mountaineers took the wins at No. 1 and 2.
Giovanni Abriola and Filippos Zachiotis got past Loyola's
Skyler Gates and
George Cavo, 7-5, at No. 1, and Christos Dagklis and Russell Armstrong beat
Edik Pribitkin and
Matt Cardano, 7-6 (3).
Cardano and Rompere picked up points for the Greyhounds with wins at No. 3 and 5 singles. Cardano outlasted Abriola, 4-6, 6-4, (10-8) in a super-tiebreaker at No. 3, while Rompere topped Cronin, 6-4, 6-3.
Dagklis beat Gates, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and Zachiotis was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Pribitkin at No. 2. Karnibad beat Cavo, 6-4, 6-1, No. 4, and Nick Huynh defeated
Ryan Boland, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6.
