Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

DeSmit's Late Game-Winner Gives Women's Soccer a Win to Start Patriot League Play

Hamilton, NY -- The Loyola Greyhounds women's soccer team traveled to face Colgate on Saturday afternoon. After a game that saw both teams create several chances, a late Baylee DeSmit goal proved to be the difference as the Greyhounds won 1-0.

In the first half, both teams had their fair share of opportunities, as the Greyhounds out-shot the Raiders 9-8 in the first half (9 shots was the most the Greyhounds had in a game this season before today). Both goalies were busy in the first half, as Paige Sim had 5 saves for the Greyhounds, and Grace Poncsak had 7 saves for the Raiders. Despite the ample opportunities, it was 0-0 at halftime.

In the second half, both defenses stepped up, as both teams didn't have as many chances, as the Greyhounds out-shot the Raiders 6-4 in the second half. The Greyhounds had the majority of the possession and were pressuring the Raiders defense for the last 15 minutes of the game. When finally, off of an pass from Olivia Quaranta, Chole Kuminkoski sent a ball into the box, that Baylee DeSmit was able to get her head on, to give the Greyhounds a 89th minute game-winner.

For DeSmit, that is her 5th goal of the season, while Quaranta tallies her 4th assist, and Kuminkoski tallies her first assist of the season. Paige Sim had yet another big day for the Greyhounds as she tallied 7 saves on the day, for her 5th shutout of the season and her 20th of her career.

The Greyhounds will continue conference play on Wednesday September 21st as they will travel to face Navy.
