Baltimore, MD --
Baylee DeSmit and
Sarah Mirr scored second-half goals on Thursday, and the Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team beat Howard University, 2-0, in non-conference play at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Neither team could find a rhythm in the first half, as neither team had many chaces. Howard had the best look of the half, but it was easily saved by Loyola's
Paige Sim.
Coming out of halftime, the Greyhounds began to find their groove, as they began to have more chances on the offensive end, including a cross from
Kelly Hutton to
Baylee DeSmit, and shots from Lea Kristjansdottir and
Delaney DeMartino. The Bison, however, were able to keep the Greyhounds out of the goal with the game scoreless.
The Greyhounds managed to get on the board in the 70th minute, as
Olivia Quaranta connected with
Baylee DeSmit to get her behind the defense, and DeSmit would put the ball by the Howard goalie to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead.
Not long after, in the 82nd minute,
Sarah Mirr would find a way to dribble past a few Bison defenders before unleashing a beautiful shot on goal which was just out of reach of the Bison goalie, making it a 2-0 game.
From there, the Greyhounds defense was able to close out the game, en route to a 2-0 home win.
Paige Sim had a quieter night than she has been used to this season, making just two saves on the night in the shutout.
The Greyhounds will be back in action on Sunday as they will host No. 24 Wake Forest at 2:00 pm.
