Philadelphia --
Charlie Herley scored in the 14th minute for Loyola University Maryland men's soccer, and the Greyhounds earned their first non-conference win of the season, as they defeated Saint Joseph's University 1-0.
With the win, the Greyhounds are now unbeaten in their last 12 games, which is their longest streak since 2008, when they went 19 games unbeaten.
"Today showed the quality and depth of our squad," said head coach
Steve Nichols. "Rotated and rested a lot of players tonight and we didn't skip a beat. We have some kids really stepping up who are progressing much quicker than we ever expected. The future is really bright."
Herley got the Greyhounds (5-1-8 overall, 4-0-2 Patriot League) on the board in the 14th minute, as he chased down a loose ball, and shot and scored to the bottom left for his second goal of the season.
Following Herley's goal, neither team found any success for the remainder of the half, as teams combined for just three shots in the remainder of the half.
The Hawks (3-11-1 overall, 1-4-1 Atlantic 10) had their best look of the night in the 55th minute, but the shot was saved by
Dylan Van der Walt to keep the clean sheet.
Rolando Onu and
Grayson Parks each had a good chance on goal, but neither could find the back of the net. The Hawks had one last chance to equalize the game on a late free kick, but the Greyhounds defense held strong, and went on to win 1-0.
Dylan Van der Walt had two saves on the night, as he registered his sixth shutout of the season, and his third straight shutout.
The Greyhounds will continue Patriot League play on Saturday, as they will host Lafayette at 5:00 PM at Ridley Athletic Complex.
