Hounds Lead Thomas Murphy Invitational After Record-Setting First Day

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland's men's and women's swimming lead their respective team races after the first day of the Thomas Murphy Invitational, during which several meet, pool and program records fell.
 
The Greyhounds lead the women's race with 784.5 points. Towson is second with 641, followed by UMBC (559.5) and Johns Hopkins (445). Loyola's men tallied 1041.5 points to lead Towson (642.5) by nearly 400. Johns Hopkins is third with 515, and UMBC is fourth (461) following the first day.
 
Record Setting Day
  • Loyola set four meet records, three pool standards and three team marks in the first finals session of three this weekend.
  • The men's 200 medley relay – Joe Hayburn, Max Verheyen, Patrick Hayburn and Caleb Kelly – opened Friday night with a time of 1:26.56 to set a meet record.
  • Kelly took down the meet mark in the 50 freestyle in 20.07, and the Greyhounds set two more relay records.
  • Lily Mead, Riley Zinger, Michala Schultz and Riley Fried set the 800 freestyle relay meet mark in 7:26.85, and Patrick Hayburn, Henry Mueller, Joe Hayburn and Verheyen swam 6:36.16 to break the meet record in the men's race.
  • Towson's Brian Benzing broke the meet record in the 200 individual medley, swimming 1:47.19.
  • Three Mangione Pool records were refreshed on Friday night with Loyola's swims in the men's 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays and the women's 800 freestyle relays clocking new pool marks.
  • The men's 200 medley relay and women's' 800 freestyle relay set new program records, and Joe Hayburn's leadoff 50 backstroke as part of the 200 medley relay broke a team record in 22.14.
Hound Winners
  • Avery Stimmel won the women's 50 freestyle in 23.37, holding off Charley Tulio who swam 23.50.
  • The Greyhounds took the top three in the men's 50 freestyle. Kelly's meet-record setting time of 20.07 seconds won the event with Patrick Hayburn (20.45) and Joe Hayburn (20.75) come in second and third.
Back For More
  • Competition at the three-day invitational continues on Saturday. Prelims will begin at 10 a.m., and finals action will take place at 6 p.m. at Loyola's Mangione Pool at the Fitness & Aquatic Center.
