Men's Soccer Drops First Conference Game of the Season, Clinches Top Two Seed in Patriot League Championships

Boston -- Brandon Meminger scored the first goal of the game in the second half for the Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon, but Boston University scored three unanswered goals, as the Greyhounds dropped their first conference game of the season, 3-1.

With Lafayette's game against Bucknell resulting in a draw, the Greyhounds have clinched a top two seed in the Patriot League Championships, and will have a bye in the quarterfinals.

The Greyhounds (6-2-8 overall, 5-1-2 Patriot League) were tested early in the game, but Dylan Van der Walt was there for the save in the second minute to keep things scoreless.

The Terriers (9-3-4 overall, 6-1-1 Patriot League) held the momentum throughout the first half, as they out shot the Greyhounds 10-2, but despite the shot difference, the Greyhounds defense held them to just two shots on target.

Early in the second half, the Greyhounds found some forward momentum, as a long shot attempt from Brandon Meminger took a deflection, and found its way to the back of the net, to give the Greyhounds the 1-0 lead.

The Greyhounds held the lead until the 73rd minute, when the Terriers tied it up, on a header off of a corner kick. Boston added another goal in the 77th minute, as a free kick shot deflected off of the post and went in, as they took the lead, 2-1.

Sean McEvoy had a good look on goal in the 85th minute to tie things up, but his header was saved, as Boston remained with the lead.

Boston scored their third goal of the game in the 86th minute, and the shot just got past Van der Walt for the goal. As the Greyhounds attempted a comeback, they drew a penalty kick, but could not convert late, as the Terriers won, 3-1.

Dylan Van der Walt recorded five saves on the day, while Brandon Meminger scored his second goal of the season.

The Greyhounds will close out the regular season on Wednesday, as they will host American at 6:00 PM.
