Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Sweeney and Gray Score for Men's Soccer, as they Close Out Regular Season with 2-1 Win

Baltimore -- Jake Sweeney and Thomas Gray both scored their second goal of the season on Wednesday night, as Loyola University Maryland capped off the regular season with an 2-1 win over American University in a Patriot League matchup.

The Greyhounds end the regular season with an 7-2-8 (6-1-2) record, and have clinched the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League Championships.

The Greyhounds got on the board early, as Jeremiah Zuniga passed it across the field to Jordy Luchies, who then sent in a cross to Jake Sweeny, who scored on a diving header to take a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute.

From there, both teams traded shots, but none of them were on target, until the 32nd minute, when Rolando Onu had a good chance at goal, but was saved by the Eagles' Matthew Tibbets.

With 30 seconds remaining in the first half, the Eagles (6-5-4 overall, 3-3-3 Patriot League) had a chance at goal, but Dylan Van der Walt came up with the big save, as the Greyhounds led 1-0 at halftime.

To begin the second half, Loyola had the momentum on offense, as they continued to press for the second goal. Sean McEvoy had a shot on target in the 53rd minute, but was saved.

In the 57th minute, Onu sent in a cross, that took a deflection and found Tyler Tucker, whose shot was saved, but Thomas Gray came in and fired in the rebound, as the Greyhounds took a 2-0 lead.

With the game winding down, the Eagles were pressing to get on the board, and they finally did in the 79th minute, after a Van der Walt save, the Eagles controlled the rebound, and a pass across the box led to a shot low right for the goal. The Greyhounds managed to hold on to a late rally, to win 2-1.

The Greyhounds will be the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League Championships, and will host the highest remaining seed on Tuesday at 6:00 PM at Ridley Athletic Complex.
