BETHLEHEM, Pa. ­– Henry Mueller and Lily Mead were named Patriot League Male & Female Swimmers of the Week on Tuesday after leading the Loyola University Maryland swimming and diving teams to dominant victories at the weekend's Thomas Murphy Invitational.
 
Both broke records during the meet and logged times that rank No. 1 in the Patriot League this season.
 
Mueller broke a 21-year old Mangione Pool 200-yard backstroke record that had been set in 2002 by Michael Phelps. The Loyola junior set the No. 1 time in the Patriot League this season, as well, with a swim of 1:44.68 to knock more than a second off 23-time Olympic gold medalist's mark.
 
In addition to being the No. 1 time in the Patriot League this year, it is also good for No. 23 in NCAA Division I thus far. He put up the top time this year in the 200 individual medley, as well, going 1:48.24.
 
Mueller was a member of three winning relay teams – the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays – that also set school, pool and meet records. He also had a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly to rank fourth in the conference.
 
Mead picked up Female Swimmer of the Meet recognition following the three-day event at which she won all three of her individual races to remain undefeated in both dual-meet and invitational action this season.
 
Mead took first in the 200 backstroke in a meet-record time of 1:57.85, and she won the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.18, also a meet-record time. She also won the 400 individual medley in 4:17.86 for her third meet record.
 
All three times are the fastest in the Patriot League this year, and her IM time is No. 25 in the nation.
 
Mead was also a member of two winning relays, the 200 and 800 freestyle, and she had multiple relay leadoff marks that are first or second in the conference this year. Her time in the 50 freestyle, as part of the 200 freestyle relay, set a pool and meet record in 23.27, and is the No. 2 time in the Patriot League this year.
 
She swam an opening 200 freestyle of 1:50.13 in the 800 freestyle relay that is No. 1 in the conference this year. Finally, her leadoff 100 backstroke in the 400 medley relay of 56.03 is second in the conference.
 
The award is the fourth Patriot League weekly honor of Mead's career and the first for Mueller.
