PROVIDENCE, R.I. –
David Brown III hit his fourth 3-pointer of the game from the right side with 1.7 seconds left in overtime, giving Loyola University Maryland men's basketball a 77-75 win at Brown University on Saturday in non-conference play.
The Greyhounds had baseline out-of-bounds play with just over 14 seconds to go.
Deon Perry dribbled the right side of the lane, but the ball came loose in the paint and was knocked free to Brown in the left corner.
Down a point, Brown knocked down the three to put Loyola in front by two. Brown called a timeout to set up a final-second attempt, but
Milos Ilic tipped the inbounds pass, and the clock ran out to give Loyola (1-1 overall) the win.
Brown finished with 12 points, all coming on 3-pointers, while Deon Perry had a team-high 21. Perry just missed a double-double with a career-best nine assists.
Golden Dike scored 14 and had a team-best nine rebounds, and D'Angelo chipped in with 10 points, while Ilic added nine.
The Bears (0-2) had led throughout the overtime period after an Aaron Cooley layup 1:24 in. Landon Lewis had a transition dunk just over 30 seconds later, and Brown led by four, 71-67.
Dike scored in the paint at 2:23, but Kino Lilly Jr. hit a mid-range jumper at 2:12, and Brown had a four-point advantage.
It was Loyola's Brown, however, that had the next salvo with 1:54 on the clock. He made a three that got Loyola within a point, 73-72, but Nana Owusu-Anane had a driving bucket 22 ticks later, and the Bears were up three.
On Loyola's ensuing possession, Perry missed a driving attempt, but Dike tipped it in to draw the score to 75-74.
The Greyhounds' defense forced a Lilly missed jumper, and Ilic came down with the rebound. After a timeout, Loyola misfired in the paint, and Lewis corralled the board for the Bears. He turned it over, however, and Dike came up with a steal to give Loyola possession to set up the final play.
The game almost didn't make it to overtime as Brown had a 65-61 lead with 38 seconds left in regulation. Perry converted two at the free throw line with 32 seconds left, and the Greyhounds got the ball back when Lilly two free throws, and Ilic got the rebound for Loyola.
He then hit a three from the same corner as Brown with eight seconds left in regulation, and Loyola led, 67-65. Lilly drew a foul with three seconds left, but this time he made both at the charity stripe to tie the game and send it to overtime.
Lily had a game-high 27 points, and Owusu-Anane put up 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Bears.
Loyola returns to Reitz Arena on Wednesday, November 15, for a 7 p.m. home opener against Binghamton University.
