BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland women's basketball had two runs of 11-0 on Sunday afternoon, as the Greyhounds had their second-best shooting performance of the season in a 74-50 win over the U.S. Naval Academy while the school celebrated Women In Sports Day.
Lex Therien made 7 of 10 shots from the field and 10 of 10 from the free-throw line to score 24 points, her third game with 20 or more in four outings. She also had 15 rebounds for her 16
th double-double of the 2022-2023 season.
The Greyhounds welcomed hundreds of girls and young women to Reitz Arena for a Loyola tradition. Women In Sports Day celebrates girls and women in athletics while showcasing all of the Greyhounds' women's teams.
Loyola put on a show for the crowd in their second-straight victory, shooting 81.8 percent from the field in the first quarter, making 9 of 11 shots to build a 19-10 lead.
The Midshipmen scored with 1:18 to play in the first quarter, but it was their last basket until more than two minutes had elapsed in the second. Loyola used an 11-0 run to go up 26-10 on a
Taleah Dixon jumper with 8:05 on the clock.
Dixon was one of three Greyhounds in double figures with 12 points.
Devyne Newman joined Therien and her, scoring 11.
Loyola led 35-23 at halftime and went up 18 2:07 in on a Newman jumper, but Navy then scored 11 of the next 13 points to cut its deficit to nine, 43-34, when Sydne Watts scored in.
After a Greyhounds' timeout, Loyola scored the next 11 points. Two
Cristina Garcia free throws with 2:13 left in the third quarter capped the 11-0 run and gave the Greyhounds a 55-34 advantage.
Loyola shot 59.1 percent from the field, its second-best shooting performance of the season behind only when it shot 60.9 percent in a January win over Army West Point.
The Greyhounds also had a 34-17 advantage in rebounds, led by Therien's 15.
With the three in double figures,
Kelly Ratigan was close behind with eight points, and
Laura Salmerón added seven.
The Greyhounds head on the road for their next two games, starting with a Wednesday, February 22, game at College of the Holy Cross.
