Baltimore, MD -- The Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team used a big first half to lead them past the Holy Cross Crusaders on Saturday afternoon, as the Greyhounds won 20-7.
The Greyhounds (9-2) offense got the scoring started early, as the
Jillian Wilson scored within the first minute of action to give the Greyhounds an early lead. The offense stayed hot, as they scored nine goals in the first quarter. Seven different players scored in the opening quarter, led by
Chase Boyle and
Georgia Latch who had two goals each.
Katie Detwiler scored her first goal of the season with one second left in the first quarter. Latch also added three assists in the first quarter.
The offense continued to click in the second quarter, scoring another six goals in the quarter. Wilson added another two goals in the second quarter, as she continued her big scoring week. Latch had a big first half, tallying a hat-trick of goals and assists in the half. Boyle and Wilson both had a hat-trick in the first half.
In the second half, the Greyhounds defense started strong, holding the Crusaders to just one shot in the third quarter. After the explosive first half, the Greyhounds offense paced slowed, but was still effective, scoring four goals on seven shots in the third quarter.
Latch finished with a career-high five goals and nine points on the day. Wills had a season-high five points with two goals and three assists. Wilson added four goals, while Boyle had a hat-trick.
Regan Kielmeyer recorded her first career start and recorded a goal.
Katie Detwiler,
Meg Hillman, and
Gabby Stapleton all added goals on the afternoon.
Lauren Spence had two saves on the afternoon and one ground ball.
The Greyhounds controlled the possession throughout the game, as they won the draw control battle 23-7. 23 draw controls is a season-high for the Greyhounds, with Wilson winning 13 draw controls on the day. Detwiler added six, while Latch added three.
The Crusaders (4-8 overall) were led by Kate Burns and Henna Brennan with two goals each. Mackenzie Creagh recorded three saves on the afternoon.
The Greyhounds will be on the road next Saturday, as they will travel to face Colgate next Satruday at noon.
