Annapolis, MD – The No. 9 Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team traveled to face the No.25 Naval Academy on Friday to close out the regular season. The Greyhounds scored three goals in the last minute of the first half, as they went on to win 15-7.
With the win, the Greyhounds secure their ninth regular season Patriot League Championship, and their ninth-consecutive undefeated Patriot League season. Their regular season conference unbeaten streak is now at 75 games.
With a draw control to begin the second half,
Jillian Wilson surpassed
Livy Rosenzweig as the Loyola career leader in draw controls. She also set the new Patriot League single season draw control record.
The Greyhounds' (15-2 overall) offense got off to a slower start than they're use to, as they did not score their first goal until the 8:02 mark of the first quarter. The Greyhounds scored three straight goals in the first quarter, as they led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.
After a pair of goals early in the second quarter, the Midshipmen answered with a goal of their own to cut it to a 5-3 Greyhounds lead. With under a minute remaining in the first half, the Greyhounds managed to score three goals.
Sydni Black,
Emily Wills, and
Jillian Wilson all scored in the final minute of the first half, as the Greyhounds led 8-3.
Coming out of the half, both teams' offenses struggled to find any rhythm, as both teams combined for just three goals in the third quarter.
Chase Boyle scored the lone Greyhound goal of the quarter, while DeFabio and Messinese scored for the Midshipmen.
The Greyhounds offense clicked in the fourth quarter, scoring six goals in the quarter to separate from the Midshipmen. Five different players scored in the quarter, including a pair of
Jillian Wilson goals, as the Greyhounds went on to win 15-7.
Jillian Wilson led the way with five goals on the night, to go along with an assist.
Emily Wills had a hat-trick of goals and assists on the night, while
Sydni Black also had a hat-trick on the night.
Georgia Latch and
Meg Hillman both had a goal on the night.
Lauren Spence had 8 saves on the night, to go along with a ground ball on the night.
The Greyhounds won the possession battle once again, as they won 17-9 in draw controls.
Jillian Wilson had 11 draw controls on the night, while
Katie Detwiler added two of her own.
The Midshipmen (12-5 overall) were led by Tori DiCarlo with three goals and Lola Leone with two goals. Ava Yovino, who ranks first in the Patriot League in assists and points per game, was held without a point for the first time this season.
With winning the Patriot League regular season championship, the Greyhounds will host the Patriot League Championships. The semi-finals will take place on Thursday, May 4. The games will be at 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM. The championship game will be on Saturday, May 6 at 2:00 PM.
