Swimming & Diving’s Mead, Loeffler Named To United States Team For World University Games

Loyola University Maryland swimmer Lily Mead has been named to United States Team for the upcoming World University Games, and she will be joined by Greyhounds Head Coach Brian Loeffler, at the competition that will be held this summer in Chengdu, China.

Competitors are eligible for the World University Games if they are students at a collegiate institution, are incoming freshmen to such a school or have been former students who graduated within the last year.

Mead continued her standout career at Loyola as a junior this year, earning All-Patriot League First Team recognition for the second time in as many years while winning three individual events at the conference championship meet.

She took top honors in the 200-yard individual medley, 200-yard backstroke and 100-yard backstroke at the Patriot League Championships in February, scoring 60 points, the most by a Loyola women's competitor in meet history. Her 100-backstroke win was the second of her career after she took first in the event at the 2022 championship.

Mead set school records in those three events, as well, during the season, and she was also on a school-record setting relay team during the year. After the Patriot League Championships, she took second in the 100-yard butterfly at the ECAC Championships.

Loeffler recently completed his 31st season at Loyola will join the United States Team as an assistant coach at the games.

He will bring his 37 years of experience at Loyola as a student-athlete and coach to the pool deck in China, as well as his considerable international coaching involvement with U.S. Swimming for which he has coached at multiple Paralympics and other events.

The games in China will open July 28 and conclude August 8 in the Sichuan Province capital of Chengdu.
