Men’s Lacrosse Picks Up All-American Honors From National Publications

BALTIMORE – Payton Rezanka was named a First-Team All-American by both Inside Lacrosse and USA Lacrosse Magazine, while three other Greyhounds earned recognition from the publications this month for Loyola University Maryland.

Evan James and Adam Poitras were both named to the All-America honorable mention by Inside Lacrosse, while Luke Staudt was tabbed to the honorable mention by USA Lacrosse Magazine.

Rezanka put together another outstanding season as a short-stick defensive midfielder for the Greyhounds and closed his career as one of the program's most-decorated players at the position where many have earned All-America honors.

Last season, Rezanka was a Third-Team All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA); he garnered second-team recognition from Inside Lacrosse and honorable mention from USA Lacrosse Magazine.

He is the fourth Loyola short-stick defensive midfielder to earn All-America honors over the last 11 full seasons, joining Josh Hawkins, Pat Laconi and Matt Higgins. Rezanka is now the second – along with Hawkins – to be a two-time All-American.

This season, Rezanka compiled 19 caused turnovers and 18 ground balls while showing his skill in transition, as well. He totaled nine points with four goals and five assists in 16 contests.

Over the course of his career, the San Diego native played in 70 games and had 73 caused turnovers, 85 ground balls, nine goals and nine assists. The two-time All-Patriot League First Team honoree finished his career with 73 caused turnovers rank eighth in Loyola history overall and second among short-sticks behind Laconi's 75.

James and Poitras both earned All-American Honorable Mention after excellent finishes to their seasons. Poitras led the Greyhounds in goals (34) and tied for the team-lead with 49 points, while James was close behind with 31 goals and 41 points. Both were named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team after the Greyhounds reached the championship game.

Poitras finished the year with seven hat tricks and nine games with two or more goals scored. Over the course of Loyola's last five games, Poitras moved from the midfield to attack, and he scored 16 goals with six assists. He had four-goal games against Colgate and at both Lehigh and Boston University during the run. He also was named to the All-Patriot League First Team as a midfielder.

James similarly ramped up his scoring output after a move from midfield to attack late in the season. He scored 18 goals and had five assists in the Greyhounds' last six games of the year as he started on attack. He scored four goals in the home regular-season finale against Colgate before breaking out further in the Patriot League Championships. He set a tournament single-game record with six goals at Navy in the quarterfinal round, and he then went for four goals and three assists in a semifinal win at top-seeded Boston University. Overall, James had five hat tricks and eight games with two or more goals during the season.

Staudt showed ability to be one of the nation's top goalkeepers both early and late in the season.

He opened the year with 19 saves in a win over then-No. 1 Maryland and 10 in a victory over Johns Hopkins, allowing just 12 goals in those two games. Staudt posted 10 or more saves in the Greyhounds' first eight games of the year. He again turned up his play late in the season, making 18 saves in the Patriot League Quarterfinal at Navy while yielding just seven goals. He set a career high with 20 saves against Boston University in the semifinals, and he made 11 against Army West Point in the championship game earning All-Tournament honors.
