Toomey, Wyers, Heuston Begin World Championships This Week

SAN DIEGO – Loyola University Maryland Head Coach Charley Toomey will be on opposite ends of the sideline in coming days from two Greyhounds as a trio from Loyola begin competition at the 2023 FIL World Championships.

Toomey will help lead the United States team as an assistant coach, while Cam Wyers '22 and Matt Heuston '23 will suit up on the field for Canada and Australia, respectively.

The Championships begin June 21 when the United States and Canada play at 7 p.m. (PDT). Heuston and Australia play their first game the following night against the English National Team.

Toomey recently completed his 18th year as the head coach at Loyola and his 26th as a member of the Greyhounds' coaching staff. Overall, he is in his 30th year on the Evergreen campus, including his four seasons as a student-athlete from 1986-90

He has a 177-93 career record, and early in the 2016 season, Toomey became the second coach in program history to reach and cross the 100-win plateau; he stands second on the program's all-time wins chart behind his college coach, Dave Cottle (181-70, 1983-2001).

As a head coach, Toomey has coached 51 USILA All-Americans, 104 all-conference selections, 21 conference positional or players or rookies of the year, a Tewaaraton Award winner and five finalists and 22 USILA Scholar All-Americans.

Wyers became the 21st player in program history to earn All-America honors three times from the USILA after he was recognized on the third team and with honorable mention last year, as well. The close defender tied for the team-lead with 22 caused turnovers this year in the Greyhounds' 17 games during 2023, finishing with 79 in his career, a mark that is good for fifth all-time at the school.

He started all 69 games that he played for the Greyhounds and started each of those contests at close defense. Wyers picked up 157 ground balls in his time with the Greyhounds, 31 this past season.

Heuston, whose father, Tim, is Australian by birth and was a rugby union player there before moving to the United States, will wear the green and gold when the Aussies play in the top pool of competition against teams from the United States, Canada, the Haudenosaunee and England.

He tied his career-high with six goals out of the Greyhounds' midfield this season while starting on the first unit in five games; he played in 10 games overall after missing the first part of a season with an injury. In 32 career games, he has scored 13 goals and has eight assists for Loyola.

This year, he posted a goal and an assist against both Holy Cross and Colgate before going for two goals in the Patriot League Championship Game against Army West Point. He picked up a career-best four ground balls at Lehigh, and he had caused turnovers on the ride in four of Loyola's last five games.

He graduated with his Bachelor of Business Administration in information systems and plans to return to Loyola to pursue an interdisciplinary Master of Business Administration next year.

The United States will face Australia on June 23, the Haudenosaunee a day later and the English team on June 25 to conclude pool play.

Canada and Australia will play on June 24 with the Canadians playing the Haudenosaunee on June 25. Canada will the play England on June 26, the final day of pool action. Australia final game of the opening games will be June 26 against the Haudenosaunee.
