Dayton, OH -- The Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team traveled to face off against the Dayton Flyers in their home opener on Thursday evening. After taking a 1-0 lead at halftime, the Greyhounds could not hold on, as the Flyers stormed back in the second half to win 4-1.
The Flyers (1-0 overall) maintained the majority of the possession to begin the game, but the Greyhounds managed to ease themselves into the game, as they managed to put together a few good attacks on the offensive end of the field.
Baylee DeSmit managed to capitalize on a through ball from
Delaney DeMartino in the 31st minute, as DeSmit shot and scored in the bottom right corner to give the Greyhounds an 1-0 lead at halftime.
Paige Sim recorded three saves in the first half to keep the Flyers scoreless.
In the second half, both teams possessed the ball and had opportunities with no goals being scored in the first 20 minutes of the half. That all changed in the 66th minute, when the Flyers got on the board, thanks to a redirected goal to tie it at 1-1. The Flyers didn't stop there, as they scored two goals within 1:42 of each other, scoring the first on a strike from distance, and the second off of a Greyhounds turnover to make it 3-1. The Flyers would add a fourth goal in the 84th minute, as they went on to win 4-1 on opening day.
Baylee DeSmit scored her first goal of the season, while having a game-high four shots.
Delaney DeMartino recorded her first career assist and point.
Paige Sim recorded 6 saves on the day.
The Greyhounds will host Temple on Sunday at 6:00 PM for their home opener at Ridley Athletic Complex.
