Baltimore, MD -- The Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team hosted the Temple University Owls on Sunday night for its 2023 home opener. Junior midfielder
Elizabeth Gallagher played hero for the Greyhounds, scoring her first goal of the year in the 85th minute to secure a 1-0 win.
The Greyhounds (1-1 overall) controlled the game in the first half with the Owls (0-2 overall) lone shot coming at the 40th minute.
Paige Sim came up big for her lone save of the night. The Greyhounds outshot the Owls, 5-1, in the first half, with
Baylee DeSmit,
Delaney DeMartino, and
Kelly Hutton each having a shot on goal in the first half.
The second half followed suit, as the Greyhounds maintained the action on the offensive end, leading in shots, 7-0. Despite the shot differential, the Greyhounds could not find the back of the net. But, in the 85th minute, after a cross into the box from DeSmit, Gallagher had the ball bounce right to her. She managed to head the ball over the Owls goalkeeper for the goal.
Baylee DeSmit and
Kelly Hutton both had a game-high three shots, while
Malia Tarazon had two shots on the night. Sim was not tested in goal, as she had just one save on one shot on the night.
